Exhibit of Israeli
Artist in Baltimore

BALTIMORE, Md., (JTA) —
An exhibit of drawings by Anna
Ticho, an Israeli artist,
opened at the Baltimore Mu-
seum of Art and will run until
May 6. The exhibit includes 24
pencil and ink drawings, most
of them Israeli landscapes. Mrs.
Ticho, who was born in Austria
and now lives in Jerusalem,
has had independent showings
of her works in Vienna, Paris.
New York and in several cities
in Israel.

the Sabbath was an original 'de-
velopment of the people of Is-
rael. Actually the division of
the days into weeks indepen-
dent of the days of the month
is a purely Israelite institution
and is generally unknown
among other cultures of early
Semitic times. Old Semitic texts
mention an Accadian "Shap-
patu" which was a day cursed
with ill luck and fell on the
7th, 14th, 21st and 28th days
of the lunar month. People who
could afford to postpone their
work on these days did so. The
Hebrew day of rest was certain-
ly no day of bad luck. It was a
fortunate day. It had no con-
nection with the day of the
month and all observed it —
not as taboo — but as positive
religious experience.
i It was the day on which the
I Almighty rested after creating
, the universe. Therefore its
observance exemplified a belief
in the Almighty and in His
creative acts and powers. Its
I purpose is stated explicitly in
the Bible — For on it did the
Almighty rest from all his work
which He created. In addition
to this motif, Jewish tradition
adds the idea that the Sabbath
is a memorial of the Exodus
from Egypt. The Sabbath is
then the pillar of freedom in-
suring every individual his

On the Sabbath eve the serv-
ice has introductions, the first
part of which are six Psalms
(95, 96, 97, 98, 99, 29). The
introduction was put in gener-
ally to indicate that one should
start the Friday evening pray-
ers a little earlier than the
week-day evening prayers, since
one should seek to add to the
Sabbath, it being such a choice
day. Some say that the six
Psalms represent the six days
of the week and they are fol-
lowed by the Poetry of Solo-
mon Alkabetz, the Kabbalist,
whose "L'Cho Dodi" Poem is an
act of accepting the Sabbath
and ushering it in. Some con-
sider them Psalms which are
supposed to put the worshipper
into the mood of song and
Prayer as he prepares to con-
front the majesty of the Sab-
bath Day.
