Leon Stein Dramatically Retells
Tragic Story of Triangle Fire
By RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX
The flame of the Havdalah
candle on Saturday night is
doused in the residue of the
wine leftover after drinking the
cup of Havdalah wine.
This custom is practiced so as
to demonstrate that the Havda-
lah candle was not an ordinary
flame lit for mundane purposes;
but rather a flame lit exclu-
sively for the performance of a
religious act. Some consider this
practice a means of uniting
the two elements used for the
Havdalah, i.e. the candle and
the wine. Others claim that this
practice indicates that even if
the light should be put out, the
taste and stimulus of the wine
sustains us until the light is lit
again. Even when the light of
hope seems to fade we have the
faith that it will yet be lit again.
Some inhale the aroma of the
smoldering wick after it has
been doused in the wine. Some
claim that this demonstrates our
delight in having performed the
religiouS act. Others say that it
is significant of the fact that
when the light of the Sabbath
has faded and the liquid of the
wine has been consumed, the
Jew lives through the week to
come with the memories and in-
spiration of the preceding Sab-
bath which stays with him as
the sweet aroma of the candle
doused in the wine.
It is customary to rub some
of the wine over the eye lids,
after dousing the candle in it.
From the passage in the Psalms
which is read when doing this,
the motive can be gleaned. It is
customary to say "The Com-
mandment of G-d, is pure, en-
lightening the eye - (Psalms
19:9) when doing this. This
shows that the observance of
the Almighty's commandments
bring enlightment. It is also
taken to mean that man, upon
setting out to begin his week's
work, should be careful to use
his eyes properly so as to evalu-
ate the situation that confront
him in their proper perspective.
The eyes can lead; they can also
mislead. Rubbing them with; the
wine represents our attemrit to
use them wisely.
Commission for Complaints of
the - Belgian National Employ-
ment Office restored the right
to jobless benefits of an
Orthodox Jew who refused to
register on Saturdays.
Regulations require registra-
tion on each working day that
a worker is jobless. When the
Orthodox Jew refused to regis-
ter on Saturdays, his jobless
benefits were withheld and he
filed a complaint.
His complaint was sustained
by the Commission on refer-
ence to the Belgian constitution
and to the Convention on
Human Rights. The Commission
agreed that the documents con-
firmed the rights of religious
Jews to exercise their religion
without any direct or indirect
compulsion and that this cov-
ered the complainant's case.
The Commission noted that it
