Historical Data
Editor, The Jewish News:
Ramat-Gan, Israel,
April 11, 1962.
Only occasionally I get hold
of your well-done, informative
and lively newspaper. So just to-
day I had a look into your issue
of March 2. 1962. But I spotted
a little error — based, as it
seems, on some irritating feetH
in4s -- in the fine article (on
p4e 14) about "Franklin and
the Jews."
Well — there it is again: Dr.
Blanche Katzan's reference to
the "Jew William Herschel" who
discovered the Uranus was cer-
tainly made in connection with
Sir William Herschel (1738-
1822). Alas — this great man,
born in German town of Han-1
over into a family of strictly '
Protestant stock, was the son of
a musician in the Royal Han-
overian Guard, was himself (just
as his brother Jacob) a good
Christian musician in the Army,
crossed with his Regiment to
Britain as a young man, was
organist at Halifax parish church
and then (1767) organist in a
famous Chapel. at Bath. In fact,
he remained a musician and
composed (Hayden paid him a
visit in 1792) all his life. Only
by pure accident. he became
then. too, the world-famous as-
tronomer, discovering Uranus in
1781 and being knighted in 1816.
May be, of course, that Dr.
Katzen has — apart from that
"Jewish-sounding" name of "Her-
sc:iel" — some real substantial
sources for this great man's
"Jewish"origin. I very much
doubt it.
I venture to assume that some
"confusion" has occurred in this
case with another famous man:
Baron Farrer Ilerschell ( note
the different spelling„„ plea ,,e)
who lived 18371899 and was, at
one time, lord chancellor of Eng-
land. This man had a most thrill-
ing life story, too. He was born
in Strelno what used to be the
"Provinz Posen" (Prussia), as
the son of one Haim Herschel'
who later changed into Rev.
Ridley Herschell.
Or is it perhaps that Sir Wil-
liam Herschel has been mixed
up with Salomon Herschel or
(Ilirsebel) 1762-1842, a London
born rabbi, the son of Hirschel
Levin?
I am sure, dear Editor. you
will not be cross with this "lee-
lure" about the origin of a great
astronomer. We Jews have quite
enough great and fatuous men
and women of undoubtedly Jew-
ish stock so that there is indeed
no necessity of claiming people
who do belong to other national
or religious communities.
With many good wishes also I
for . a very happy Pesach.
Yours truly
.
J. Raphael.

An innovation in the pre-
sentation of annual volunteer
awards by the Center will be
the reading of a citation to all
volunteers. Mrs. Arthur Rice,
to be awarded for 10 years and
10,000 hours of service to the
Center, will accept the citation
on behalf of the volunteer group.
The JFCS and the Center are
member agencies of the Jewish
Welfare Federation and the
United Community Services of
Detroit. Resettlement Service is
supported by the Allied Jewish
Campaign.
Members and friends are in-
vited to attend the annual meet-
ing and the reception to follow.
