Dimona
When Dimona was founded in the
end of the year of 1955. in the mid-
dle of the desert. many called it in
ridicule "Dimyona" (from the word
dream).
Today as Dimona passes it's sixth
year the dream turned into reality.
The town Is full of life, the number
of inhabitants passed 5,000, and it is
absorbing a hundred more families
every month. Dimona is designated
to turn into a center for large de-
velopment projects in the Negev and
a residence for the workers in the
mines in the area; the potash, bro-
mide, phosphate, etc.
AR the beginnings are difficult.
The first settlers, that came from
North Africa. lived in tin houses,
open to sand storms and dust, and
felt themselves alone in the desolate
desert. But little by little Dimona
overcame the difficulties; new dwell-
ings were built, roads were paved,
the population grew and there was
more work. The Dead Sea project at
Sedom and the phosphate project
were extended and workmen came
over to live in Dimona. In the city
new industrial projects were built:
diamonds and textile, etc. All these
turned Dimona into a city of in-
dustry.
Fifty per cent of settlers today in
Dimona are old (liners in the country
and thus born here. At the end of
this year the number of its inhab-
itants will reach 10,000 and by the
end of 1962 will reach 14,000 souls.
