MISS MARCIA KUTNICK
Temple Candelablum
The synagogue is a replica,of
the tabernacle of the wilder-
ness and the temple of Jerusa-
lem. It is therefore not surpris-
ing to find objects in the syna-
gogue that represent the items
found in the original tabernacle
or temple. In the tabernacle,
the Bible describes the exis-
tence of a seven-branched can-
delabraum (Exodus 30:31 and
Exodus 37:17). From a descrip-
tion in Zachariah (4:1) it would
seem that the candelabraum
had symbolic meaning. It is
said to represent the seven
planets, the central light rep-
resenting the sun. Some claim
that the seven branches of the
Menorah symbolize the seven
days of creation and that the
center branch signifies the Sab-
bath—the holiest day of the
week which gives light and in-
spiration to all the rest. The
seven branches of the candel-
abra have often been correlated
with the seven words of a verse
in the Psalms which reads "Be
gracious unto us 0 Lord be gra-
cious unto us; for we are full
sated with contempt."
