The decline of Yiddish and
Ladino were mentioned by Dr.
Roth as evidences of changing
conditions that have led to Eng-
lish becoming the predominant
language used by Jews.
Describing the events that led
tc the emergence of Israel, Dr.
Roth called the rebirth of state-
hood one of the great historic
occurrences. But he added that
Israel is always "on the brink
of a precipice." The fate of Is-
rael. he said, is in the hands of
its two million citizens who must
and will protect the state. "but
cur fate also is in their hands.
because if they go down so will
we. It is our job to strengthen .
Israel because our interest is in-
volved."

sents an outline of Jewish ra-
tionalistic teachings of faith and
reason, the elements of national-
ism and universalism in Jewish
history, the acquisition by Jews
of Aramaic as a sister language
to Hebrew.
