Jerusalem Zadik Parley Discusses
Rabbi Arye Levin, the "Zadik"
(virtuous man) of Jerusalem has Issues Facing Jewry
NCJW-Sponsored Hebrew School
I
Israel's mining industry, hith-
erto dependent on foreign per-
sonnel for many of its skilled
positions, will in the future get
its technicians from a newly
established training institute in
Israel, established at the ORT
vocational center at Givatayim.
The school will- provide in-
struction for pit foremen, chief
miners and technical specialists.
It is at these levels that the
shortage of mining personnel has
been most acute. In the process,
the school will be creating what
is virtually a new profession in
Israel, the mining technician.
<ivYT . TP
The program has the support
of Machzavei Israel, the Israel
Mining Industries Limited, which
is the government corporation
assigned to exploration of com-
mercially feasible ore deposits
and the organization of pilot
plants for their exploitation.
Originally concerned with the
extracation of phosphates in the
Negev, Machzavei Israel has been
responsible for the establishment
of the copper industry in the
Eilat area and is presently con-
centrating on the location of iron
in the Galilee.
Some of these veins have
been found sufficiently worth-
while to warrant test runs. Gali-
lee iron would require sub-
surface operation. Much hope is
pinned on it to provide the raw
material for the "Steel City"

received a good reputation through-
out the world, and many that come
to Jerusalem seek to acquaint them-
selves with him, to speak with him
and to receive his blessing.
Reb Arye, that came to Jerusalem
in his youth from Lithuania. went
day by day from house to house to
the beds of the sick encouraging
them. extending financial aid. to
take interest in their pains and
suffering. and bless them to be well
completely. The greatest of his
acts of kindness is his help to
those dwelling in the leper colony.
These sick (people) are miserable
and isolated. No person comes to
visit them. Reb Arye is the only
person to look after every one of
them, although by so doing he risks
his health.
Reb Arye also went to the prison-
ers; they called him - Father." He
listened to their problems and en-
couraged them. In the time of the
British mandate. when the jails were
full with prisoners of the Under-
ground. Reb Arye would visit them,
teach them Torah, console them,
and make contact with their families
outside. When the British govern-
ment sentenced to death the under-
ground fighters, the prisoners were
put into secluded cells and no one
was permitted to contact them ex-
cept Reb Arye Levin. He was with
them during the last moment before
they were taken to the gallows.
By so doing. Reb Arye the Zadik
of Jerusalem received the title of
"The father of the prisoners of
Zion."

NEW YORK, (JTA) — Rabbi
Mordecai Kirshblum, president

America, called on the move-
ment to aid American Jewry
which he said was being "con-
tinuously undermined" by the
forces "of assimilation and dis-
integration." •
He spoke at a conference open-
ing the 60th anniversary cele-
bration of the organization at-
tended by some 600 Orthodox
rabbis and lay leaders. He told
the- conference that religious
Zionists "must engage in an in-
tensive drive to re-educate
American youth to the basic
values of traditional Judaism,
Zionism and its spiritual impli-
cations.and the need for an af-
' firrnative and dynamic Jewish

He also urged the movement
to "assume the heavy responsi-
