WASHINGTON — Sixteen
years ago, an emigre from Nazi
Germany stood nervously on the
platform of the District of
Columbi a' s Americanization
School to accent the prize in an
anual essay competition on the
meaning of democracy. He was
then studying for his American
citizenship.
Eric Weile was back on the
same platform last week—his
role reversed.
As the newly-elected presi-
dent of Bnai Brith Argo Lodge,
Washington, he greeted this
about my essay. He asked to
read it. When he finished, he
shook my hand and said: 'Con-
gratulations. Y o u understand
what Americanism means. I de-
clare you a citizen'."
Weile was co-owner of a
celluloid factory in Germany.
An ebullient personality, now
54, he rebuilt his life as pro-
prietor of an old fashioned ice
cream parlar.
Weile's creations are gastro-
nomic concoctions literally built
from the ground up, and have
made his place a well publicized
institution in Washington's
suburbs.
Last year he was cited by
Label A. Katz, president of Bnai
Brith, for his outstanding com-
munity service. This year he
was voted Argo Lodge's "most
valuable member."

For Weile it was a nostalgic
moment—recalling how his own
prize essay had made him a
citizen.

BY HENRY LEONARD
presented a brief to the Cana-
dian Royal Commission of in-
quiry on Education in which they
called for some changes in the
present school arrangements in
the province of Quebec where
most Jewish children attend pub-
lic schools operated by Protes-
tant churches.
The brief was prepared by the
Congress after an extended sur-
vey of the views of both organi-
zations and individuals in the
Jewish community, including
"r a b b i s, synagogues. Jewish
schools, general organizations
and individuals with a constant
interest in matters of education
and with public-spirited motiva-
tions."
The principal recommenda-
tion is the reconstitution of Jew-
ish school commissioners which
existed briefly about 30 years
ago. The reconstitution is urged
so that the Jewish commissioners
could negotiate with the Protes-
tant school boards in the name
of the Jewish community.
The brief proposes basically
that the British North America
Act, which is a section of the
Canadian constitution, be amen-
ded to give Jews equal status
with Protestants in the Quebec
public school systems.
The Jewish child population in
Quebec numbers 22,083 of whom
17,725 attend Protestant schools
and 4,358 attend Jewish day
schools. There are non-sectarian
public schools in Quebec. Other
than Jewish day schools, the
Jewish High School Youth
Aspire to Attend Colleges
Results of a survey, first of
its kind conducted by the vol-
unteer members of a women's
organization, indicate that Jew-
ish high school youth want col-
lege educations more than any
other youth group in the Unit-
ed States and Canada.
The proportion of Jewish
10th, 11th and 12th graders
who plan to attend college is
"much higher" than that of
other youth on comparable aca-
demic levels, according to re-
sults announced to the Bnai
Brith women's executive board
convened for its semi-annual
session in Washington.
A study of membership prac-
tices of the Benevolent and
Protective Order of Elks
showed that 64 of 454 lodges
studied—about 15 per cent—
did not accept Jews or made it
difficult for them to become
members.
