Anti-Defamation League Fights
Institutionalized Discrimination

American Jews are faced
with the paradox that anti-
Jewish discrimination has be-
come so institutionalized that
it is "virtually a built-in part
of modern American living"
even though Jews have found
greater opportunity and se-
curity in the United States
"than anywhere else in his-
tory."
This is a major conclusion of
the Anti-Defamation League of
Bnai Brith which issued a com-
prehensive review of a series
of surveys, carried on for more
than five years, of patterns of
discrimination against Jews in
the United States.
Benjamin R. Epstein, the
league's national director, and
Arnold Forster, its civil rights
director, said that overt or-
ganized anti-Semitism "has been
rejected by the overwhelming
majority of Americans and has
declined sharply" in the past
two decades. They also said
that there is "growing aware-
ness of the iniquity of racial
and religious prejudice" in the
United States.
"But today's attitudes, the
product of yesterday's history,
have produced patterns of dis-
crimination which are per-
vasive, furtively practiced and
thus far, only slowly yielding
to the educational process,"
they said.
Epstein announced that the

Anti-Defamation League has, in
recent months, increasingly di-
rected its activities to problems
of discrimination against Jews
and that "programming in this
area will be emphasized much
more in the years ahead."
"The phenomenon of social
and other types of discrimina-
tion victimizes not only Jews
but all those who wittingly or
not practice it and the nation
which loses by it,"he said. "We
have concluded that there is
need for new research and in-
vestigation in this area, need
for new civil rights legislation,
need for substantial educational
programs to arouse community
action to a problem which has
become so much a part of the
scene that it is virtually a
built-in part of modern Amer-
ican living."
The review of anti-Jewish
discrimination by Epstein and
Forster will be published on
April 17 by Farrar, Straus and
Cudahy under the title, "Some
of My Best Friends . . ." It
covers discrimination in hous-
ing, employment, education,
and social life and offers such
examples of the extent of the
problem.
