A simple method of detectin g
*d is stomach cancer has been found
by two Sinai Hospital physi-
cians.
>>-Dr. J. Edward Berk, director
of the Department of Medicine
.o at Sinai Hospital, and Dr. Shel-
don M. Kantor, a medical resi-
dent at the hospital, report that
a naturally fluorescent drug,
Declomycin, can be used to
;a1 make cancerous cells glow.
About 36 hours before the
Z
12/ test is given the drug is taken
orally. A stomach sediment is
collected and is placed under an
ordinary ultra-violet lamp. If can-
cer is present the cells appear as
L- bright yellow spots. If not, there
is no glow.
The method can be used in a
doctor's office without elab-
orate training or equipment.
"Its great merits are simplicity

Along with his duties at Si-

directors of the Yates clinic.
He is clinical professor of Med-

Surgeon General.
Dr. Kantor, formerly a stu-
dent of Dr. Berk at Wayne, be-
gan his internship at Sinai in
June, 1960. Last year he was
awarded highest honors at the
hospital for his work on this
project. He is married and has
one child.
