`Artist Rabbi' Killed; Last of Dynasty

JERUSALEM, (JTA) — Fu-
neral services were held here
Sunday for Rabbi Abraham
Shapira, the Rebbe of Droho-
bytch and popularly known as
the Artist Rabbi, who died last
Friday at the age of 77 after
he was struck by a speeding
automobile on Jerusalem's main
street.

attending the services.

Synagogues Saturday

Orthodox synagogues in the
metropolitan Detroit area this
sabbath will welcome a delega-
tion of f our representatives
from the central office of the
Lubavitcher movement in
Brooklyn, N.Y.
The four delegates will speak
at Sabbath services this Satur-
day and at special Chabad adult
nd youth groups throughout the
city and suburbs.
The delegatiof. includes Rabbi
Berel Baumgarten, the Luba-
vitcher representative in Argen-
tina; Rabbi Nissen Mangel and
Rabbi Shmuel Lew of Brooklyn,
and Rabbi Moshe Feller, re-
gional director of the Merkos
L'Inyonei Chinuch, in Minne-
apolis.
Rabbi Feller will speak at
Young Israel of Oak-Woods at
morning services and at the
afternoon services at Y o u n g-
Israel of Greenfield. Rabbi Fel-
ler will also speak at the N'shei
Chabad Study Group that will
take place at the Young Israel
of Oak-Woods at 3:30 p.m.
Rabbi Mangel will speak at
the Mishkan Israel at morning
services and at the Cong. Bnai
Israel at afternoon services.
Rabbi Baumgarten will speak
at the Young Israel on Wyoming
at morning services and at after-
noon services at Cong. Beth
Yehudah. Rabbi Baumgarten
will also speak at the N'shei
Chabad Study Group that will
take place at the Young Israel
at 3:30 p.m.
Rabbi Shmuel Lew will speak
at Cong. Nusach Hari in the
morning and at Cong. Mogen
Abraham in the evening.
All of the Chabad delegates
will be honored at a Melave
Malka planned for 9 p.m. Satur-
day at Young Israel of North-
west Detroit, 17376 Wyoming. A
movie, "The baking of hand-
made matzoh," will be shown.
The publio is invited.
The Chabad delegates will
lecture and entertain at a youth
rally 2 p.m. Sunday at North-
west Young Israel, sponsored by
Merkos L'Inyonei Chinuch, the
educational group of Chabad.

pira took up painting some
years ago. Except for some
coaching on the use of colors
by the late Hermann Struck,
Rabbi Shapira's mastery as an
artist was self taught and con-
sidered of high professional
standard. He assumed the
mantle of the chassidic Rebbe
at the death of his elder
brother.
