MISH-MASH

How did 3 get started in a theatrical career? Mama gave me

my first push. Mama was a dressmaker. Since we lived
around the corner from the Columbia Theatre in Phila-

delphia, Marna's first customer was an actress, Fannie

Thornashefsky. If the name rings a bell, it should. She was
the sister-in-law of Boris Thomashefsky, the famous Yiddish
actor. One day Marna was on her knees with a mouth full of
pins, draping Fannie's ample figure, when a thought struck
her. "Molly, sing a little something for the lady." Nine year
old Molly needed no urging, and burst into song. Mama was
so proud and excited she stuck Mrs. Thomashefsky with a
pin. Nevertheless, the actress liked my performance and
promised to let me sing in her next show. When she left, I
jumped up and down and shouted. "Hurrah, I'm an actor!"
Mothers are all alike. Years later, a woman barged into my
dressing room with her little girl who was dressed in an exact
copy of a costume I wore in Circus Girl. "My daughter is
crazy about you," she began. "I have to take her to see all
your plays. She stands in front of a mirror a whole day
copying everything you do. She insisted on coming back
stage to meet you." The child stood motionless, .staring at
the floor. "Go on, Sandra, tell Miss Picon how much you
love her, how you want to be just like her when you grow up.
Show her how you can sing and make funny eyes like Shmend-
rick." Poor Sandra stood frozen. In desperation, her mother
said, "All right, so you won't sing. But at least tell the lady,
she should hear it from your own lips, who your favorite
actress is." Finally the girl spoke up: "Mickey Mouse." g

You see? Sometimes coaxing is the worst thing you can do
comes to eating. But when you
serve appetizing Rokeach Foods, coaxing, of course, is never
necessary. With bad weather around, your children need
all the nourishment that a good hot bowl of Rokeach Vege-

to a child, especially when it

table Soup can give them. You never have to worry about
vitamins with Rokeach Vegetable Soup on the menu. It's

prepared with no less than 15 different vegetables. What
other soup gives you so many? And here's another blessing,
from Rokeach ...Tomato Sauce with Mushrooms. Pour it
over rice, baked fish, meat loaf, whatever you want eaten up
in a hurry. So stop coaxing the kids to eat. Use psychology
... and a little of that delicious Rokeach Tomato Sauce with
Mushrooms.
