Rockwell Demands Union Square
for Nazi Rally; New York Says No

NEW YORK, (JTA) — New
York City officials indicated
George Rockwell would not be
permitted to stage a rally in
Manhattan's Union Square Park
despite a second request by the
Nazi for the site.
Rockwell informed Parks
Commissioner Newbold Morris
in a letter that he would forego
his proposed rally on April 20
— Hitler's birthday — if the
Parks Department would
change the rally site from the
small park at the foot of Man-
hattan Island to Union Square.
The Nazi said he had to "in-
sist on my right to speak for
Americans in the same place
regularly desecrated by Com-
munist traitors—Union Square."
Rockwell's initial request for
the Union Square site had been
turned down on grounds that a
rally on April 20, a working
day, might "interfere with bus-
iness" there. In his renewed
requist, Rockwell, said he would
shift the date to another day,
a Sunday, "when there can be

JERUSALEM — Six million
forest trees have been planted
by the Jewish National Fund
in Israel during the 1961-'62
planting season.
Afforestation provided 146-
000 workdays, mainly to new
immigrants. The list of tree
species planted is headed by
the Jerusalem pine (about 3,-
000,000 saplings). Next came
the Brutia pine and several
varieties of cypress and euca-
lyptus tree.

18 Soviet Jews
Are Indicted on
Speculation Charge

PARIS, (JTA) — Eighteen
Soviet Jews are among 44 de-
fendants charged with corrup-
tion and "theft of public prop-
erty" whose trial opened this
week in Frounze, the capital of
the Soviet Republic of Kir-
ghizia, the influential Le Monde
reported this week.
Basing its report on a story
in the "Sovietskaya Kirghizia,"
the French daily said that the
defendants included such prom-
inent local personalities as the
vice minister for commerce and
the former president of the
"Grosplan" of the Soviet Re-
public.
The defendants were accused
of having stolen government
property valued at 3,000,000
rubles and with selling it on
the black market. The indict-
ment said that with the pro-
ceeds, the defendants allegedly
purchased gold, precious stones
and foreign currency.
Fourteen of the defendants
have typical Jewish names but
to dispel any possibility of mis-
understanding, the Soviet news-
paper wrote that "everything
started with a grouj of looters
named Goldman, Nathanson
and Singer."
Another Soviet newspaper
reported this week that Soviet
authorities executed two Soviet
Jews who had been convicted
in an earlier trial last Decem-
ber. The newspaper Z a r y a
Vostako, published in the
Georgian city of Tibilisi, re-
ported that Mordekh Abramo-
vitch Kakiashvili and A. F.
Steimanov had been executed
for alleged economic offenses.

On the occasion of the cen-
tenary of the birth of the Yid-
dish poet Morris Rosenfeld, the
Yivo opened in its building, the
former Vanderbilt mansion, on
Fifth Avenue and 86th Street,
an exhibition, titled "Morris
Rosenfeld (1862-1923) and His
Time."
The singer of the immigrant
generation, its tribulations and
triumphs, Rosenfeld won wide
acclaim in the English-reading
world with the English transla-
tion of his poems by Professor
Leo Wiener, of Harvard Univer-
sity in 1898. The same recep-
tion was accorded to the other
translations into European lan-
guages, German, Polish, Hun-
garian, Czech and others.
