The collection of old books on April 8 is the first phase of the campaign. The old books, in turn, will be sold in the drive's second phase, a "New Books for Old Sale," to be held May 6-13. Proceeds will be used to buy new books, journals and manuscript collections for the Brandeis library so that study and research can be carried on. New Books for Old chairman is Mrs. Bert Colman. She said two segments will comprise the effort on April 8, designated as "Buzzes and Bags Day." Members of the Chapter's Tel- E-Thon Squad will call hun- dreds of wo- men in the Detroit metro- politan area from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to ask for their contributions of old books. •During the same period, Mrs. Colman other workers will be covering the area picking up the several thousand "Fill Me Book Full Bags" which were distributed to the membership and friends. Katz, execu- tive secretary of Temple Beth El, and president of the Jewish Historical Society of Michigan. Publication of this study was made possible with the coopera- tion of the Leonard N. Simons Fund of Temple Beth El. A foreword to the book by Dr. Jacob R. Marcus, of Cincinnati, director of American Jewish Archives, commends Katz for his research work and expresses the hope that it "will serve as a spur to other Jewish communi- ties to write the story of their coreligionists who also fought in those troubled times in the struggle to save the Union." Containing many photo- -graphs of Michigan person. alities who figured in the story and supplemented by an • extensive bibliography, Katz's book throws light on the early history of the Jews in Michi- gan. It serves to supplement the vast amount of historical data that is being compiled about Jews who served in the Civil War. This study contains the rec- ord of the Jewish soldiers in the Civil War from this area, listing many names, the regi- ments in which they served and any category, for children and adults, and may include paper- backs.
