Detroit Chapter Drive Will Help

Stock Brandeis University Library Troth Announced

Jewish Soldiers in the Civil War'

Detroit Chapter of the Na-
tional Women's Committee for
Brandeis University will launch
a concerted drive on April 8
to fulfill its responsibility of
developing and maintaining the
library of the university at
Waltham, Mass.
The collection of old books
on April 8 is the first phase
of the campaign. The old books,
in turn, will be sold in the
drive's second phase, a "New
Books for Old Sale," to be held
May 6-13. Proceeds will be used
to buy new books, journals and
manuscript collections for the
Brandeis library so that study
and research can be carried on.
New Books for Old chairman
is Mrs. Bert Colman. She said
two segments will comprise the
effort on April 8, designated
as "Buzzes and Bags Day."

dreds of wo-
men in the
Detroit metro-
politan area
from 10 a.m.
to 4 p.m. to
ask for their
contributions
of old books.

same period, Mrs. Colman
other workers will be covering
the area picking up the several
thousand "Fill Me Book Full
Bags" which were distributed
to the membership and friends.
The Detroit Chapter has set
its goal for 30,000 used books
in resaleable condition, accord-
ing to Mrs. Milton Doner, vice
president. The books may be in

War," by Irving I. Katz, execu-
tive secretary of Temple Beth
El, and president of the Jewish
Historical Society of Michigan.
Publication of this study was
made possible with the coopera-
tion of the Leonard N. Simons
Fund of Temple Beth El.
A foreword to the book by Dr.
Jacob R. Marcus, of Cincinnati,
director of American Jewish
Archives, commends Katz for
his research work and expresses
the hope that it "will serve as a
spur to other Jewish communi-
ties to write the story of their
coreligionists who also fought
in those troubled times in the
struggle to save the Union."

• extensive bibliography, Katz's
book throws light on the early
history of the Jews in Michi-
gan. It serves to supplement
the vast amount of historical
data that is being compiled
about Jews who served in the
Civil War.
This study contains the rec-
ord of the Jewish soldiers in
the Civil War from this area,
listing many names, the regi-
ments in which they served and

any category, for children and
adults, and may include paper-
backs.

April 8 will be at the Cadillac
Plastics Company on Second
Blvd., according to Mrs. Jerry
Morse, Book Fund vice presi-
dent.
Tel-E-Thon Buzz chairman is
Mrs. Lawrence Weiner. She will
be assisted by Jill Doner and
Mesdames Myron Unger, Harry
Modell, Samuel Aaron, Alvin
Barnett, Leonard Birndorf, Her-
bert Burdick, Herbert Blum-
berg, Charles Briskman, Samuel
Caplan, Milton Doner, William
Gershenson, Malcolm Lowen-
stein, Felix Mahler, Leo Mellen,
Jerry Morse, Bud Rosenthal, B.
David Ruby, Daniel Siegel,
James Wineman, Marilyn Wald-
bott and Oscar Zemon.

tions in Michigan circles—Jew-
ish and civic—are part of an
important section of the book.
Among the well known names
are those of Emanuel Halevy
Wodic, who for many years
served as Temple Beth El's war-
den of cemeteries; Adolph Bar-
low, Dr. Isidore Freund, David
M. Amberg, Zechariah Selling
and many others.

eck, in collaboration with Dr.
Alfred H. Whittaker; and "Brit-
ish and American Child Welfare
