Immigrants' Seder Celebration

t4
=

The Sederim conducted by these Iraqi immigrants in Israel
have a western flavor but the chant of the Haggadah is decidedly
oriental. Above photo was taken last year at Neve Haim, one of
the homes for the aged maintained by the Joint Distribution
Committee-Malben welfare program for aged, ill and infirm im-
migrants in Israel. At Shar Menashe, Yemenite immigrants sat on
carpets and used a special, round, leavened matzoh, while at
Givat Hashlosha and other Malben installations, the more familiar
Ashkenazi Sederim took place. In every case the story was the
same and all rejoiced that the Seder was taking place this year
in Israel. Funds for JDC's world-wide relief and rehabilitation
programs are provided chiefly by the campaigns of the United
Jewish Appeal, major beneficiary of Detroit's Allied Jewish
Campaign.

Passover Story

Strategy Fills Table
Several days before Passover,
a poor man took his scanty sav-
ings to market and spent all for
a chicken and wine. Upon his
return home, his wife angrily
berated him: "Why did you spend
all money on Pesach luxuries
instead of buying matzoh and
potatoes?" The man replied:
"Don't worry, everything will be
alright."
He went to the president of
his congregation and told him of
his plight. The following day, a
big bag of potatoes and a large
box of matzoh arrived at his
home. "You see," gloated the
husband: "Had I asked for chick-
en and wine, they would - have
refused me flatly. Since I asked
only for matzoh and potatoes,
they sent us a generous portion
of both. That's what I call good
strategy."

demned man in custody gives
the Jewish people the oppor-
tunity of interpreting to the
world the meaning of the holy
commandment — to show how
the vicious circle which has
throttled humanity through ages
can be broken.
"Israel ought to induce hu-
manity's highest institution —
the United Nations—to take the
condemned man in custody until
the ,day when, without human
interference, he will part from
this life.
"In spite of his horrifying
deeds he ought to be given the
possibility to end his life in pen-
ance."

Daniel Brick, chief editor of
Judisk Kronika, of Stockholm,
Sweden, is soliciting the aid of
"other Jewish chief editors in
the world . . to apply to the
President of the State of Israel
for commuting the capital pun-
ishment of Eichmann to life
imprisonment."
Brick wrote on the matter in
Judisk Kronika:
"The crime which has been
committed is so unfathomable
that the execution of one man
is no expiation. And this man
did not commit the crime alone.
Together with him were thou-
sands and thousands of co-mur-
derers, he belongs to a nation
of which an overwhelming ma-
jority did not react, he belongs
to a world whose leaders were
not unaware of what was hap-
pening on the European conti-
nent. What might have been
done was not done to prevent
or to obstruct the bestial exter-
mination.
