The great in boxing, dating
back to the famous fighters in
England more than a century
ago, through the annals of pugil-
ism in this country, pass in
review in a truly great book—
"The Fireside Book of Boxing
—A Collection of Pugilism's
Great Literature and Art,"
edited by W. C. Heinz, pub-
lished by Simon and Schuster
(630 5th, N.Y. 20).
Some of the best newspaper
stories have appeared in the
sport pages of our newspapers,
as will be evidenced in some
of the gems by Arthur Bris-
bane, Irvin S. Cobb, Grantland
Rice, Budd Schukberg, Nat
,Fleischer and many others,
whose essays are reprinted in
this excellent collection gath-
ered by Heinz, himself an able
sports and feature writer.
Then there are stories and
boxing accounts by Victor Hugo,
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Hey-
wood Broun, Richard Harding
Davis, Irwin Shaw, Louis Gold-
ing, Ernest Hemingway and a
score of more of other world
famous writers.
The stories give accounts of
some of the great Jewish
fighters. Heinz points out
that pugilism in this country
traces the records first of
the Irish, then of the Jewish,
Italian and Negro fighters.
Among the earliest great fig-
ures in the sport was the
Jewish fighter, Daniel Men-
doza, who was popular in
England. Called "The Light of
Israel," Mendoza, who was
born in London, July 5, 1764,
took part in 36 bouts, the
last one when he was 56.
In "The Fireside Book of
Boxing," Heinz has included
a memoir, "From Street
Fighting to Fame," by Men-
doza.

Heinz states that the "ex-
cerpts are from 'The Memoirs
of the Life of Daniel Mendoza,'
the first such by any champion
published in 1826 and edited
anew in 1951 by Paul Magriel.
They tell of his penchant, be-
fore his two victories over
Richard Humphries made him
famous, for his street fighting,
of his visit with King George
III, with whom no other Jew
had ever spoken, and of an ex-
perience not common to fight-
ers whose reputations make
them targets."
Reference to Mendoza also
is made in another selection in
Heinz's book, Pierce Egan's
"Jem Belcher from Bristol, One
of the Most Heroic Champions
of England."
Heinz's book takes on added
significance for the numerous
illustrations, reproductions of
cartoons and paintings about
pugilists and a complete set of

photographs of the heavyweight
champions of the world.
Of special interest is the
reproduction of the full front
page of the New York Times
of Sept. 23, 1926, which de-
voted its three-line eight-
column head to the news of
Tummy winning the cham-
pionship in 10 rounds from
Dempsey—six of the top
eight columns on that page
having been given over to
that fight which was attended
by 120,757, netting a gross
gate of $1,895,733.
Readers of this volume will
learn about boxing rules. They
will be entertained by verses
and a scene from Clifford
Odets' play "The Golden Boy"
and a number of verses.
"The Fireside Book of Box-
ing" is a most illuminating
book about pugilism that will
delight all who are interested
in good literature, whether or
not they are boxing fans.

The Jewish Museum of the Jewish Theological Seminary
of America, New York, and the Bezalel National Museum in
Jerusalem will each interchange for exhibit four Purim scrolls
(egillahs), representative of rare items in each collection.
This overseas exchange of outstanding objects, a first-time
venture for both museums, was intiated to celebrate the Jewish
Museum's annual Queen Esther Purim Ball on March 24.
The theme of the affair this year is Purim in Israel. On the
night of the ball, the reciprocal exhibits will open simul-
taneously in New York and in Jerusalem. Shown above is a
hand-painted 18th Century megillah from Alsace.

Dr. Alexander Schiff
Gets Boxing Award

By HAROLD U. RIBALOW

(Copyright. 1962,
Jewish Telegraphic Agency, Inc.)

For 36 years. Dr. Alexander
Schiff has been working with
the New York State Athletic
Commission, taking care of
fighters and examining them.
Thus, he recently was named
the winner of the New York
Boxing Writers' Association's
James J. Walker Memorial
Plaque "for long and meritori-
ous service to the sport."
Dr. Schiff had an opportunity
to talk about fighters and the
fight game today. He declared
that he has examined more
than 20,000 fighters in his time
—which should make him an
expert of sorts.
According to Dr. Schiff, these
men have been his favorite
fighters: Jack Dempsey, Rocky
Marciano, Maxie Rosenbloom.
Mickey Walker, Henry Arm-
strong, Tony Canzoneri, Sixto
Escobar and Frankie Genero.
CHESS MASTERS
The current U.S. Chess Cham-
pionship tournament is less
than impressive because of the
12 masters, the two best are
missing. Bobby Fischer and
Sammy Reshevsky are not com-
peting. No reason has been
given for their absence. The 12
in the tourney are Paul Benko,
Larry Evans, Raymond Wein-
stein, James T. Sherwin, Edmar
Mednis, George Kramer, Sidney
Bernstein, Herbert Siedman,
Abe Turner, Eliot Hearst, Don-
ald Byrne and Robert Byrne.

Poetry About Anti-Semitism
Benjamin Ben Abraham Anav,
a Jewish liturgical poet who
lived in Rome in the 13th cen-
tury, is best known for his poetic
descriptions of anti-Semitic inci-
dents in his time. These includ-
ed the seizure and burning of
cartloads of Hebrew books at
Paris and Rome. in 1244, the in-
troduction of the Jew-badge in
1257 and the desecration of Jew-
ish cemeteries in Rome in 1267.
