`A Majority of One' One of the Screen's Greatest

When a Jewish lady under-
takes to explain the Yiddish
expression "kwelling" to a
Japanese gentleman, on an
oeean liner on the Way from
the United States to Japan,
about a thousand miles from
Hiroshima, it suggests an
unusual opportunity for genuine
humor.
This is only one of the good
elements in "A Majority of
One," in which Rosalind Rus-
sell, as Mrs. Jacoby, tells Alec
Guinness, who plays the role
of the wealthy Japanese whom
she has befriended, that "kwell-
ing" is an expression of pride
in something you love.
And there are so many other
Hebrew and Yiddish expres-
sions, and Mrs. Jacoby's whole-
some approaches to life—
strictly in her spirit ' as an
observant Jewess who accom-
panies her children to. Japan
where her son-in-law is on a
State Department mission.
The Japanese gentleman pro-
poses to her, and she explains
why she can not accept: she
lives in the memory of her late
husband Sam, and he is not
Sam; neither is she the coun-
terpart of the Japanese gentle.
man's late wife.
The friendship continues. It
began with animosity: Mrs.
Jacoby could not forget that
her son died in the last war
against Japan. But the Japanese
also lost a son and a daughter
in the war, and both learn to
understand one another.

Thus, there are valuable dis-
cussions of bigotry in the
movie's text, and the ultimate
result is a thorough repudia-
tion of hatred and an important
approach to genuine good will
among all peoples. The lesson
of the play is effective.
The film is among the most
entertaining ever flashed on the
screen. It is full of humor,
while possessing moments of
pathos. It has many excellent
passages, and the acting of the
entire cast—headed by Rosalind
Russell and Alec Guinness—is
super.
"A Majority of One" is a
must for all lovers of good
theater. It is one of the most
charming productions and in
many ways excels its pre-
decesor, the Broadway hit.
In spite of the genuine
charm inherent in this film,
although it is one of the most
wholesome and most enter-
taining Hollywood produc-
tions, it has not drawn the
audiences it deserves. It has
played to unfilled houses, and

the Mercury Theater will re-

days. That's most regrettable.
But as compensation, Mercury
is bringing back "Exodus" for
a brief run next Wednesday,
when "A Majority of One" will
terminate. There is a chance
to see the excellent Rosalind
Russell-Alec Guinness team in

remaining few days.
