"MAY WELL BE
THE BEST
MOVIE NOW
AROUND!"
IT WAS BACK IN 1948 that
Joe Segal. new catering man-
ager at Sammy's in Oak Park,
was called on to handle the
more than 1,000 folks who at-
tended a sports broadcasters
banquet honoring the great
New York Yankee outfielder
Joe Di Magio . . . The affair
was in the ballroom of then
Yankee owner Col. Jacob Rup-
pert's brewery, and everybody
was, of course, served beer with
his meal . .. However, one man
at the speakers table insisted
on a bottle of Coca Cola, which,
to Joe's embarrassment, he
didn't have — especially since
the man was James Farley, for-
mer U. S. Postmaster General
and chairman of the board of
Coca Cola . . . Sid Weiss, also
at Sammy's now, asked what
happened and Joe replied, "I
made sure in a hurry that Mr.
Farley got his "coke" before he
had a chance to call up and get
it himself !"
THE WONDERFUL WORK
being done at veterans hospi-
tals by the 12 Jewish War Vet-
erans posts and auxiliaries was
again exemplified by the Sho-
lom Auxiliary when it recently
staged a party for the vets at
Ann Arbor Veterans Hospital
. . . Easther Goldman, state hos-
pital chairman, Mildred Ruskin,
auxiliary chairman, and their
respective husbands, Max and
Morris, made sure the patients
had plenty of fruit and cig-
arettes . . . The Capris,•a youth-
ful group of Oak Park musici-
ans, played in 11 different
wards, to the eager delight of
the hospitalized vets . . . All
veterans hospitals in the area
Ann Arbor, Battle Creek and
Dearborn, are serviced once a
month by the 12 posts and aux-
iliaries, which also give monthly
parties to the D. J. Healy Chil-
dren's Home and at the Girl's
Detention Home.
IT'S NO NEW thing for Fran-
ces Shapiro to be a president of
Fidelity Ladies Club . . . she's
been its head five times al-
ready . . . But it was a great
honor when the group's organ-
izer in 1954 recently received
an honorary president's pin ...
