Knesset OK's Devaluation

dealers abroad from any loss
ensuing from the new currency
exchange rate.
The withdrawal of the stamps
from circulation will eventually
tend to increase the values of
stamp stocks abroad and will
compensate for any decreased
values due to devaluation.
Among the issues taken out
of circulation were the Israel
Philharmonic Jubilee stamp, a
number of afforestation stamps
and nine stamps in the land-
scape series. This left for Post

securities as a replacement for
dollar-linked securities, as one
way to absorb the excess spend-
able money. Another suggestion,
was to increase the interest
on foreign currency deposits to
about nine or ten per cent.
Manufacturers reached an
agreement with the government,
under which no surcharge duties
will be levied on raw materials,
and the manufacturers agreed
to maintain existing prices as
long as stocks bought at pre-
devaluation prices remain avail-
able.
Gift parcels from abroad are
now subject to higher taxation,
as a result of the devaluation.
Under the new customs rates,
the tax on foods has risen from
one and a half pounds to two
and a half Israeli pounds per 2.2
pounds of weight. Gift clothing
taxes remain at 84 per cent for
wool and cotton goods, and 100
per cent for silks and synthetic
fibers. The used-clothing levy
has gone up from 40 agora (40
per cent of an Israeli pound) to
a pound per 2.2 pounds of
weight.

dows he designed for the syna-
gogue in the Center. Born in
Vitebsk, Russia, in 1877, this
great artist has absorbed the en-
vironment of his childhood and
the traditions of Judaism into
his intensely colorful and ima-
ginative style of painting and
sculpture.
Jacob Tsur, world chairman of
Keren Kayemeth in Jerusalem,
presiding at the dedication cere-
monies, expressed Israel's appre-
ciation for what Hadassah has
done in the past and will do in
the future to help the country
push back the desert by planting
trees. He explained that the new
forest has been dedicated to the
Hadassah women in recognition
of their long tradition of close
cooperation with the JNF's af-
forestation work.
Rabbi Israel Weinstock, head
of the religious department of
Keren Kayemeth, recited a spe-
cial prayer for the planting of
trees in the Holy Land. Then
followed the placing of tiny sap-
lings into the freshly turned soil
by each of Hadassah visitors.
Since the establishment of the
State of Israel over 13 years ago,
JNF has planted over 50 million
trees.

Among the- supporters of the
government policy were the
Achdut Avoda deputies, who
went along with their coalition
partners.
Meanwhile, several thousand
workers in large plants in Tel
AViv staged a two-hour demon-
stration strike to protest against
attempts to postpone paying
higher cost-of-living allowances.
The Histadrut Central Com-
mittee decided to wait until
March 15, when the February
co s t-of-living index is published,
before deciding whether cir-
cumstances warranted demands
for an additional cost-of-living
allowance.
Importers have refused to pay
the surtax on goods already in
port and refuse to clear them
from the dock areas. The Haifa
port, as a result, was almost
totally blocked today by goods
and ships waiting in Haifa Bay
for space to unload.
The•Port Authority has
warned the importers that if the
port is not cleared the goods
will be removed to bonded
warehouses at the expense of
the importers.
One of the first groups to take
advantage of a mortgage conces-
sion granted by the government
was the Miami Group of inves-
tors, which raised $2,000,000
within a few days to pay off at

The LARGEST

Marc Chagall, renowned paint-
er and sculptor, last week placed
the first pine sapling in the
10,000 tree Jewish National
Fund forest on the grounds of
the Hadassah-Hebrew University
Medical Center near Jerusalem.
The forest is a tribute by JNF,
to Hadassah on its 50th anniver-
sary.
Chagall, accompanied by his
wife, came to Israel from Paris

The Knesset supported the
government's new economic
policy by defeating by a vote
of 66 to 43 three non-confi-
dence motions introduced
separately by the Herut, Ma-
pam and Communist factions
in protest against the devalua-
tion of the Israel pound. The
Liberal Party abstained on
the vote.
