ELIZABETH A. MYERS

The 200th anniversary this
spring of the arrival in Detroit
of its first Jewish citizen, Chap-
man Abraham (Jewish News,
Feb. 16, 1962), has renewed in-
terest and research among schol-
ars and historians.
A few facts are known, also,
about Abraham's young wife,
Elizabeth Judah, who was des-
tined to become a prominent so-
cialite through her second mar-
riage after his death.
A member of the well-known
Judah clan, early pioneers of the
Jewish community in Montreal,
Elizabeth .was born in 1763. She
was 20 when Abraham, 40 years
her senior, died in 1783. Records
refer to her as a "wealthy wi-
dow" during the four years prior
to her marriage in New York
in 1787 to Moses Myers, a well-
known merchant-shipper,
Mr. and Mrs. Myers moved to
Norfolk, Va., where they became
prominent citizens. In 1791, My-
ers built a mansion in Norfolk
which is still standing as a city
museum. The portraits of Mr.
and Mrs. Moses Myers, painted
by the famous artist Gilbert
Stuart, now hang in the man-
sion. Elizabeth Abraham Myers
died in 1823.

Vienna Jews Protest
Ritual Murder Painting

VIENNA, (JTA)—The Vienna
Jewish community has pro-
tested strongly to the director
of the Vienna Art Museum the
inclusion of ritual murder rep-
resentations.
The exhibit covers the cul-
tural and religious historical de-
velopment of the Austrian Ty-
rol. Jewish visitors discovered
representations from the Cath-
olic Church in Rin, a Tyrolean
township, - depicted the holy
"Anderl," whom the Jews were
accused of murdering for "ritual
purposes" in 1475.
