Israeli Cops Foiled
in Try to Nab Rabbi
in Kidnaping Case

TEL AVIV, (JTA)—Attempts
by police to arrest the rabbi of
Kommemiut settlement, near
here, were thwarted by the set-
tlers who blocked the road to
the rabbi's home. Orders for the
arrest w er e countermanded
after the Minister for Religious
Affairs, Zorach Warhaftig, in-
tervened with the police au-
thorities.
The rabbi was sought in con-
nection with all-out efforts by
the police to locate Yossele
Schumacher, who was kidnaped
from his parents two years ago
by his grandfather, Nachman
the latter
Shtarkes, because

feared he would not be brought
up in a religious manner. Nine
persons were arrested Sunday
in various parts of the country
in connection with the case.
Those arrested were arraign-
ed in courts in Jerusalem, Ram-
la, Lydda, Beit Shemesh and at
Kommemiut, where the boy was
believed to have been held dur-
ing the first weeks after he was
taken from his parents. The
nine persons were interrogated
by the police in attempts to
find the whereabouts of the
Schumacher boy and ordered
held for 15 days on suspicion
of complicity in the kidnaping.
Police continued searching a
number of centers largely popu-
lated by religious persons. The
grandfather of the kidnaped
boy has been in jail for a
lengthy period in efforts to get
him to reveal the whereabouts
of Yossele. Shlomo Shtarkes,
the boy's uncle, is presently un-
der detention in England on a
request by Israel for his extra-
dition in connection with the
case.

Yeshivath Beth Yehudah
Corrects TV Digest Error
Editor, The Jewish News:
Unfortunately it is sometimes
necessary to belabor the obvious.
Some weeks ago our school was
supposed to participate in the
Quiz 'Em TV program, with
the program to be taped on a
Friday and to be shown on
Sunday.
When network programming
required that the program be
shown on the Sabbath instead,
our school gracefully withdrew;
the Detroit News, sponsor of
the program, was most under-
standing and re-scheduled us
for some time in May.
Alas, the TV Digest did not
get the word in time, and
listed the Yeshivah program as
appearing on Saturday. We
laughed the mistake off; how-
ever, we have discovered that
a goodly number of people are
under the impression that we
did permit our program to be
shown on the Sabbath, and I
would t her e f or e appreciate
your bringing the facts to the
attention of your readers.

Editor, The Jewish News:
I would like to ask Mrs. Aron-
son the purpose of her letter.
Maybe everything worked out
for her, but for six million Jews
it didn't.
I also was in Germany at the
time of the 1938 holocaust, how-
ever, the broken bodies which
were coming into the Jewish
Hospital, as if they were coming
from a battle field, gave us little
time to concern ourselves with

with well-merited pride at a
thriving institution, which now
more than ever before plays a
central role in the upbuilding
of the Jewish Homeland and
the rejuvenation of the Jewish
community in the United
States. But being human, it is
safe to say of him, that he re-

the multitude of friends here

a quality grown rarer and rarer
in our time, the quality of
loyalty which, like mercy, is an
attribute next to godliness.
