JERUSALEM — Articles in the press, public gatherings and a broadcast over "Kol Is- rael" marked the 20th anniver- sary of the death of Avraham Stern-Yair, who was shot in a room in Tel-Aviv by the British police which had been search- ing for him for a long time. The Mandatory Government had placed a price on his head and the capture of Stern became priority number one with the British security forces. Stern-Yair was the founder of the most extreme and radical group dedicated to the ouster of the BritW- 1 from Palestine, the LECHI (Lochamey Cherut Israel—Fighters for the free- dom of Israel) and known also as the "Stern Group." To Stern even the "Irgun" (Irgun Tzvai Leumi)—from which he broke SAUL E. National Broadcasting Company Replies to Protest Against 'Focus' Harry A'. Woolf, 18695 Rose- lawn, one of many who lodged protest with the National Broad- casting Company's television adaptation of Arthur Miller's "Focus," has received a reply from the office of Robert Sar- noff, head of the network. Woolf termed the response, written by Robert D. Kasmire, coordinator of NBC corporate in- formation, as "straddling the is- sue." The show, sponsored by the American Jewish Committee, was seen on Jan. 21. "Focus," one of Miller's earl- iest published works, tells the s tory of a Gentile couple who are mistaken for Jews by their neighbors. The suspicions of the hoodlum element are "proven" when the man rejects their ef- forts to enlist his aid in ter- rorizing a "known" Jewish fam- ily on the street, although he seeks to identify himself as a non-Jew and gives the gang his sanction to avoid trouble. Stern's Role Admitted by Ben-Gurion too bad this couple was perse- cuted because they were mis- taken for Jews. Therefore, it follows that if they were Jews it would have been quite all right." Woolf wrote, also: "No doubt it will be said that I missed the point of the play and that intelligent people of good will would understand what the point of the play was. This is the crux of the whole situation. It is not the intelligent peo- ple . . . we must worry about . . . It's the average viewer who possibly hasn't formed much of an opinion . . . about the matters such as this . . . " The reply from NBC stated: "Despite your own dissatisfaction with the production, I think you will be - interested in knowing that in general it received crit- ical acclaim for coming to grips forthrightly with an important social problem. Against Nazis Who Killed Polish Jews The Austrian authorities have requested the help of the World Jewish Congress in New York in an investigation connected with the wholesale massacre of the major part of Polish Jewry, almost 3,000,000 of whom died under Hitler. The investigation has been touched off by the recent arrest in Salzburg, Austria, of SS Cap- tain Herman Hoefle. Hoefle was chief-of-staff to an Austrian, Odilo Globocnik, who master- minded "Operation Reinhard," the Nazi program for the mas- sacre and pillaging of Polish Jewry. Globocnik is reported to have committed suicide in 1945. Hoefle, the principal assistant of Globocnik, and other staff officers are now undergoing an investigation in connection with which the World Jewish Con- gress has been asked to provide witnesses. Stern viewed the British Regime as Enemy Number One and his approach is perhaps best illustrated by the fact that, at one stage, he evolved a plan which envisaged some kind of cooperation with Nazi Germany in the days of World War II. Stern's argument was that over- riding any other consideration was the salvation of European Jewry being decimated by the Nazis and bringing them to Palestine. For this, two things had to be assured: that the Jews be allowed to leave the Nazi occupied areas and that the gates of Palestine — which the British had closed to Jewish im- migration—be forced open and the country freed of the foreign ruler. "I have no doubt," wrote Ben-Gurion, "that Yair was one of the outstanding fig- ures that we had during the British Mandate, and I respect and revere wholeheartedly both the poetry and the steel of his stormy soul as well as his tire- less devotion to the redemption of Israel. But I reject without reservation his political meth- ods." In her reply, Geula Cohen does not yield any ground and argues the case of LECHI with the game forcefulness and deep conviction as she did in her book. This unusual exchange of letters was seen here as a wel- come omen, as a sign of matu- rity, in which the internal struggles of pre-State days are receding into the proper setting of historical perspective.
