Behind the Scenes Now the story can be told of how the first Catholic-Jewish goodwill organization was formed in Spain recently—centuries after the Spanish Inquisition . . . The basis for this historic event was >laid when the president of the Jewish community in Madrid, Max Mazin, approached the American Jewish Committee to help him establish better Christian-Jewish relations in Spain. . . . He felt the time was ripe for such an effort since some leading Catholic clergymen in Spain have begun to show more understanding for Jews during the Eichmann trial . . The American Jewish Committee decided not to lose time and acted on this request not only for the sage of the small Jewish com- munity in Spain numbering some 3,000 persons . . . AJC leaders saw in friendship toward Jews by the Catholic Church in Spain also far-reaching consequences for Jewish communities in Latin America . . . It is from Spain that the Catholic Church recruits large numbers of its clergy for South American, where Spanish is the native language . . . The American Jewish Committee, therefore, sent into Spain two men — a prominent Catholic theologician and a Jew ... The Catholic was Father Paul Demana, one of the leading figures in Europe who for over a decade has dedicated himself to ameliorating the Catholic attitude toward Jews . . . The Jew was Maximo Yaguspsky, represenative of the American-Jewish Committee in Latin America, an educator who was born in Argentina and speaks a perfect Spanish . . . The two spent several days in Madrid, meeting with a number of prominent ecclesiastical figures in key posts in Spain . . . They also addressed two meetings in Madrid attended by leading Spanish clergymen and professors . . . The reaction of the audi- ences was warm and so was the reaction of the Spanish press which covered the frank discussions at the meetings . . . The result was the creation of a Catholic-Jewish . Action Committee with Sister Esperanza, Mother Superior of the Order of Notre Dame de Sion, as secretary. Communal Problems Jewish communal services depend on volunteers—especially on volunteer womanpower . .. Volunteers play a major part in fund-raising campaigns, work in . community centers, serve in hospitals and are active in various other fields of Jewish com- munal life . . . Women volunteers are the lifeline of such organ- izations as Hadassah, National Council of Jewish Women, ORT, American Jewish_ Congress, Pioneer Women, and many others. . . . In 1961, women's gifts to local Jewish federations and Wel- fare funds represented 11 per cent of the total monies raise ,I 00 Jewish communities . . . In 52 communities alone some $5, s . . . were raised by the women's divisions of the local camp , there- The Council of Jewish Federations and Welfare Fund . o . m Tah ne- fore, now, studying the problem of retention of volunt . w power in the communities and also of increasing question of how to bring into communal service t se women who hide behind their children and homes as an exc e for non- participation is now under special CJFWF study .. . rs. Henry Welfare L. Jones, president of the women's division of the Jew Federation in Detroit—who is active nationally in JA CJFWF, and other national and local Jewish causes—adva interesting views on this subject. Jewish Legacies The American ORT Federation has embarked on a program of seeking legacies for the organization and has established a National ORT Legacy Committee . . . George Backer, noted Jewish leader and former ORT president, is honorary president of the committee, and John F. Davidson, distinguished lawyer, is chairman . . . The program, formulated by David Schweitzer for many years representative of the Joint Distribution Co tee in Europe—was presented at a gathering in the Loto ub in New York arranged by Backer. Nuremberg Film Starts Thurs Nazi jurists who interpreted Nazi law according to Hitler's ideas are shown on trial at Nur- emberg, in the great film, "Judg- ment at Nuremberg," which opens Thursday at the United Artists Theater. In the process, the Nazi • ideas are exposed to light again and there is warning in this 200-minute film against the resurgence of Hitlerism. Actual scenes of concentra- tion camps as they were found by the British and American liberators are part of this truly great spectacle. There are many dramatic scenes, and one of the great lessons in the film is offered towards the end. When one of the convicted Nazis tells the American judge, Dan Hayward (Spencer Tracy), that he did not know his actions would come to what Nazism had brought the world, and pleaded: "You must believe me," the American replied: "Herr Janning, it came to me that the first time you sen- tenced to death a man you knew to be innocent." "Judgment at Nuremberg" is a must for all who wish to know the past and fully to understand the tragic era of Hitlerism, while striving to prevent currence. Preceding the formal com- mencement of the showing of "Judgment at Nurmberg" on Thursday, there will be a benefit performance Wednes- day for the American Associa- tion for the United Nations. It will be the only "reserved seat" performance. Federal Judge Theodore yin is one of the honorary c men of the committee s or- ing this benefit perf ance.
