Round Table Women's Division
Brotherhood Teas on Feb. 21

The annual Metropolitan
Brotherhood Teas sponsored by
the Women's Division of the
Detroit Round Table will be
held Feb. 21.
Radio Station WJR will carry
a special broadcast at 2:15
beamed to those attending the
teas. Mrs. Jerome Cavanagh,
wife of Mayor Cavanagh, and
Lee Murray, WJR's women's
director, will discuss the need
for bettering human relations
in our communities.
"We often want to become
better acquainted with our
neighbors," said Mrs. Irving
Small, chairman of the Women's
Division, "but we don't take
the time nor make the effort
to know them or the contribu-
tion they make to the com-
munity. The idea is giving the
teas is to invite together women
of different racial, nationality
and religious backgrounds. We

feel that in this mass demon-
stration of friendliness we may
show to the City of Detroit a
unified effort to understand
ourselves through an effort to
understand others."
"It is our hope," she said,
"that this gesture may con-
tribute to the unity of our
metropolitan area. After all
brotherhood begins on your
street. Brotherhood Week is not
just one week set aside in the
year to promote good human
relations but rather a time to
strengthen our resolution and
rededicate ourselves to the
principal of establishing a social
order in which the religious
ideals of Brotherhood and jus-
tice shall become the standards
of all human relationships."
Information about giving a
tea may be obtained by calling

Organizations Laud Swiss Official
Who Risked His Life to Save Jews

GENEVA — Charles Lutz, a
wartime consul general for
Switzerland in Budapest who
risked his life to save thousands
of Jews from the Nazi gas cham-
bers, was honored for his serv-
ices to Hungarian Jewry.
His services were lauded by
representatives of the American
Jóint Distribution Committee
and the Jewish Agency at a
dinner here in his honor.
Attending the event were Moshe
Bartur, Israel's permanent rep-
resentative to the European
Office of the United Nations in
Geneva; Charles H. Jordan, JDC
Director General; Eban Laor,
Jewish Agency representative

for Europe; and Tibor Rosen-
baum, director of Helvis.
As Swiss Consul General,
Lutz, issued from 1943 to 1945
protective letters to thousands
of Jews, thus delaying their de-
portation by Gestapo Colonel
Adolf Eichman until they were
liberated by the allied forces.
When • all diplomatic and con-
sular missions except Raoul
Wallenberg, the Swedish Consul
General, left Budapest, Lu

Israel Cabinet Hears Proposals
to Ease Armed Rule Break Strike

,

JERUSALEM, (JTA)—Prime
Minister David Ben-Gurion sub-
mitted to a meeting of the Cabi-
net here a series of recommen-
dations for the relaxation of
Israel's military rule in border
areas occupied by Israeli Arabs.
He will present the recom-
mendations to a meeting of the
Knesset to forestall the passage
of several bills pending in the
House, calling for total aboli-
tion of the military govern-
ment.
The Premier's recommenda-
tions include greater freedom
of movement for Arabs inside
the controlled areas along
Israel's frontiers with the Arab
states. They also provide for
the creation of civilian coth-
mittees, comprised of local
residents, to whom persons con-
sidering themselves aggrieved
by the military may appeal.
Ahdut Avodah served notice in
the Cabinet that it will support
the opposition on this issue
when it arises in the Knesset
on Feb. 14.
Minister of Labor Yigal Allon
reported to the Cabinet that he
had notified the Engineers'
Union—the trade union group
conducting the current strike
of 6,000 salaried engineers —
that the government would in-
voke emergency regulations by
Monday midnight, unless engi-
neers return,to work in "essen-
tial" services by that time.
Allon had requested that the
union release 43 workers need-
ed for essential services in
electric power plants and in
immigrant housing. The union,
now in its fourth week of the

walk-out of salaried engineers,
chemists, architects and agrono-
mists, has refused so far to
release these men for return
to their work. Under the emer-
gency regulations now threat-
ened by Allon, he will have the
power to assign men for essen-
tial services.
