A concerted effort to finance Israel's program to make
the Negev a center of mass settlement and economic develop-
ment will be launched at the 1962 inaugural conference for
Israel Bonds, meeting in Miami Feb. 23-25. The new 108-inch
pipeline (shown above) will be of vital importance in bring-
ing water from the Jordan River to irrigate and reclaim the
desert regions of the Negev. The Negev development plan
must be expanded to make room for many thousands of new
immigrants. Major highlight of the Israel Bond inaugural will

Heads of American Firms Predict
Great Economic Strides for Israel

NEW YORK-The American-
Israel Chamber of Commerce
made public the views on
American-Israel economic ties
in 1962 advanced by heads of
American firms doing business
with Israel.
David Karr, president of
Fairbanks Whitney Corporation,
forecast that "in 1962, Israel
will make great strides in de-
veloping low cost solar energy
to provide cheap power for the
still dark sections of the world.
In the field of water desalina-
tion, 1962 will see the installa-
tion of the first low cost con-
cepts using the f r e e z i n g
method."

stressed the developments in
transporting liquid bulk car-
goes and of refrigerator space
"to enhance the possibility of
citrus fruit exports to the
United States." The extensive
developments in Israeli ship.

Jewish Leaders Confer
with Morocco Officials
CASABLANCA, (JTA)-Two
groups of Jewish leaders met
separately here with high offi-
cials of the government and
of this city, and both confer-
ences were described as cordial.
The newly organized Jewish
Committee, with Meyer Oba-
diah, the committee's president
at its head, conferred with
Casablanca Governor Driss. The
Governor expressed his wishes
for the success of the commit-
tee's activities, after hearing a
detailed report on the plans of
the Jewish body.
Members of the Moroccan
Rabbinical Tribunal, headed by
Grand Rabbis Messas and
Malka, held a conference with
Minister of Justice Mohained
Boucetta.
The Association of Former
Students of the Alliance Israel-
ite Universelle in Rabat has
contributed 1,000,000 francs to
the Moroccan OSE, the Jewish
health organization, to be used
for the treatment of ringworm
among Jewish schoolchildren in
this country. The malady is
prevalent among Moroccan chil-
dren.

Johnston to Speak
at Bond Conference

Eric A. Johnston, who went
to the Middle East eight years
ago as President Eisenhower's
Ambassador to draft the plan
for a proposed "Jordan Valley
Authority," will be a principal
speaker at the national inaugural
conference for the 1962 Israel
bond campaign, it was announced
by Louis H. Boyar, conference
chairman.
The conference, to be held
Feb. 23 to 25 at the Fontaine-
bleau Hotel in Miami, will cele-
brate the 70th birthday of Eddie
Cantor, noted comedian, who has
held an important position of
leadership in the Israel Bond
Organization since its ,inception
11 years ago. Last month he was
elected national chairman of
Builders of Israel, a division of
the Israel Bond effort which is
primarily concerned with financ-
ing the construction of housing
for new immigrants.
Johnston, who is president of
the Motion Picture Association
of America, also serves as Presi-
dent of the Motion Picture Ex-
port Association of America and
of the Association of Motion Pic-
ture Producers, and is a former
president of the United States
Chamber of Commerce. In addi-
tion, he is associated with nu-
merous industrial and financial
enterprises throughout the coun-
try.
