Bnai David Youth Venture; Essay by Leo Kirschbaum Group will hold a fund-raising 8:30 p.m. Feb. 17 in the Analyzes Shylock's Characteristics dance social hall of the synagogue, Wayne State University Press this week embarked on a new venture—the publishing of pa- perbacks. One of the first five in the new series is "Character and Characterization in Shakes- peare," by Dr. Leo Kirschbaum, WSU professor of English. Of major interest in this study is the first essay, "Shy- lock in the City of God," which, as the introduction explains, "shows the embellishment of a traditional stage villain and the submergence of the individual `good' character within group characteristics." In this brief-30-page—but very thorough study of the subject of Shakespeare's han- dling of the Jewish character and the question of anti-Sem- itism, Prof. Kirschbaum states: "The tendency of the modern psyche to exculpate Shylock be- cause he is forced by society to be what he is is to misunder- stand the tenor of the whole play. To Shakespeare and his audience sociological deter- minism was never a valid cause. It was always a villain's ex- cuse." On the question of Shylock's becoming a Cluistian, Dr. Kirschbatun asserts: "It is hard for moderns to see that this request is also part of the Christian mercy. Only if the Jew is baptized can he escape the eternal pains of hell. As the Jew wished to kill the ness which is Antonio, tonio wishes to kill the Alain which is in S Adding that "times v e changed," Prof. Kirschbaum expresses the view: "One has to adopt an his- torical perspective for 'The Merchant of Venice' in order not to be shocked by what to day seems sentimentally chau- vinistic Christianity and nasty obdurate anti-Semitism. Shake- speare wrote a meaningful fan- tasy about a bad ogre who tried to hurt some good people in the City of God, but Jews today are so real that they can be seized and burnt in Nazi crematoria. But what Shakespeare's Jew and Shakespeare's Antonio ethi- cally stand for is, perhaps, also real today. And some may say that this is a conflict w Uch must go on until th is exterminated by h%ro- gen bomb." The Kirschbaum study delves into the question of anti-Sem- itism as well as the Christian reactions against a Jew. He con- tends that "mercy is above justice" as a moral in Shake- speare's play.
