A seven-year campaign to meet this need has been con- ducted by Boys Town Jerusalem, which provides academic and vocational training and spiritual guidance. The present student body consists of boys who en- tered Israel through immigration from 25 different countries. About half the enrolled students are orphans. An American Committee for Boys Town Jerusalem has set a goal of $3,000,000 for expansion to accommodate 1,000 students, half of whom would be boarded in dormitories. A German Red Cross leader's interest in the establishment of a Red Cross Service for Palestine a quarter-of-a-centdry ago has come to light through the discov- ery of a letter in a New Rochelle resident's papers. The letter was written in February, 1935, by the then president of the German Red Cross, Major Paul Draudt, and has just been received by Jacob Fine, president of Ameri- can Red Mogen Dovid for Israel, 225 W. 57th St., New York, the supply and support wing of the Israel Red Cross service, Magen David Adorn. Early in 1935, Mrs. Ferdinand Kauffmann, now of 53 Trenor Drive, New Rochelle, N.Y., and her husband, both then living in Switzerland, were asked by a member of the World Zionist Organization if they would con- tact Major Draudt for his advice on the possibility of establishing a branch of the Red Cross in Palestine, as i was then. The fate of Major Draudt is referred to in the final paragraph of Mrs. Kauffmann's letter to Mr. Fine: "It may be of interest to you that Major Draudt, a wonderful humanitarian, was demoted soon after he had written this letter, because he was married to a wife of Jewish descent, Elly, wham Mr. Draudt did not divorce, dis- regarding higher order from the (Nazi) party." Mrs. Draudt "died either of natural causes or she was murdered in a camp. Mr. Draudt committed suicide when she was taken away."
