(Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News) JERUSALEM — Hadassah — the women's Zionist organiza- tion of America -- was the recipient of a rare citation from the Israel government here Tuesday as the women Zionists inaugurated a celebration mark- ing Hadassah's golden jubilee. On behalf of the government, Col. Yosef Nevo, Military Corn- mander of Jerusalem, awarded Hadasah the "Standard of the War of Independence," an honor never before given to any institution but only to border settlements whose in- habitants had fought in battles and displayed exceptional heroism. A special scroll accompany- ing the award to Hadassah was signed by Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion in his capacity as Defense Minister. and nurses from Tanganyika and Ethiopia will be accepted for special training within the framework of the Hadassah Medical Organization in Israel. Mann also disclosed that Dr. Michael Davies of Hadassah's Department of Preventive Medi- cine and Hygiene was named co- ordinator of medical services in Liberia. Hadassah, according to the citation, was given the award for its role in the War of Liberation, citing its contribu- tions to the defense of Jeru- salem, when Hadassah repre- sentatives "displayed unusual heroism and bravery under fife." Meanwhile it was reported from New York that the two- day Hadassah mid-winter con- ference, attended by 200 leaders of the organization, concluded its sessions Monday with an an- nouncement that the Hadassah Medical Organization in Israel will send special medical teams to African countries to help fight disease and meet problems of public health there. The announcement was made by Dr. Kalman J. Mann, direc- tor-general of the medical or- ganization. He said that as a result of the survey of eye diseases in Tanganyika, Kenya and Ethiopia carried out last month by Prof. I. C. Michelson, of the Hadassah Medical Organi- zation, two special teams of opthalmologists are now being readied for special missions to Tanganyika ropia. ed that so anno Man • e es- an e hospital wou long n Tangany' tab eady similar to one 1' eria, iated at Monrovia, das- 'c his staffed by a ah team. id, a For Ethiopia, treat- special pro nd for ment of e ent of resear ed, and la tracho a Hada a ea =w• leave for to inaugu- sh Addis rate an s -rvi the under- aking. The Hadassah also went on record as supporting President Kennedy's request for legisla- tion authorizing the acquisition by the United States of $100,- 000,000 of United Nations bonds in order to help the UN "meet the mounting deficit and pre- vent a financial crisis." Shimshon Arad, Consul of Is- rael at New York and a member of the Israel delegation to the United Nations, in other busi- ness told the "Hadassah leaders that at the last General As- sembly session the Arab delega- tions had hoped to inflict severe blows on Israel. "However," he said, "they were decisively defeated in that adventure. On the other hand, the forgotten UN basic doctrine of direct negotiations — though not mustering this time the re- quired majority — has emerged anew as the only constructive path to peace and progress in the Middle East." • 2,000 at Glamorous Event Markin Local Hadassah's 50th Annive The 2,000 people who attend- ed the 50th anniversary ball of Detroit Chapter of Hadassah, Wednesday night, at the Shera- ton Cadillac Hotel, witnessed some of the evidences of the great work of healing spon- sored by the women's Zionist movement in Israel.
