Efforts of the staff of the
Plymouth State Home and
Training School to develop a
special program for blind pa-
tients at the institution were
spurred by a contribution of
$3,500 by Children's Unlimited,
a private organization devoted
to the needs of the multiple-
handicapped and emotionally
disturbed blind child. The
funds will be use to obtain the
services of a special teacher for
the blind and a psychologist to
develop a program for the ap-
proximately 10 per cent of the
institution's resident population
who are blind.
It is estimated that there are
175 blind retarded patients in
Michigan institutions. The insti-
tutions, however, have not al-
ways been equipped either in
terms of staff or facilities to

provide the type of treatment
required for children with this
handicap. The problem is made
more critical by the fact that
established facilities for the
blind in the community have
excluded the retarded blind
child from their program be-
cause of the need to devote
their energies to the intellec-
tually normal child.
Dr. Robert I. Jaslow, medical
superintendent of the Plymouth
State Home and Tr a i n in g
School, states: "We have ap-
proximately 46 blind children
here but no special facilities
for them. We have these chil-
dren because they are retard-
ed, although we suspect in some
cases this may not be so or at
least not as retarded as one
might think. But they are blind
also, and this raises special

problems which only tho
knowledgeable in this are
e
capable of coping _wit
ith
funds provided by -
dren's
Unlimited, we can es lisp our
basic program an hopefully
build on it in the c ling year."
