Javits Commends Israel on Eichmann Trial in Senate Speech WASHINGTON, (JTA) — Senator Jacob Javits of New York, in a speech on the Sen- ate floor, called Israel's trial of Adolf Eichmann "one of the most historic events of our time" and predicted "it will be studied for many decades as a landmark in the efforts of man- kind to bring about a rule of law to replace a rule of force as the final arbiter of our des- tiny." Senator Javits said the "ma- jor significance" of the trial is that it established the fact that "the individual is entirely re- sponsible for his acts with re- spect to the laws of humanity" and that "he cannot escape his personal responsibility for vio- lations of the laws of humanity by incriminating others, by claiming superior orders or by pleading fear." The Republican lawmaker commended Israel for conducting the trial with "justice" which, he said, is what the "world had a right to expect from Israel."
