versity as a visiting professor
of Jewish history. He plans to
go to Israel, which will make
him the first rabbi from behind
the Iron Curtain to visit the
Jewish State, it became known
this week.
In statements made by Dr.
Rosen since his arrival in the
U.S., he has emphasized that
Romanian Jews adhere to and
are free to observe their reli-
gious practices and that there
is "a state of co-existence" be-
tween Jews and their govern-
ment in Romania.
He reiterated charges that
Hans Globke, Adenauer's chief
secretary, was responsible for
the Nazi anti-Semitic Nurem-
berg laws. The rabbi expressed
surprise that there still are
some who give Globke, who de-
nies major charges of Nazism
against him, the benefit of the
doubt.
Rabbi Rosen's contention is
that in pre-war Romania anti-
Semitism was actively encour-
aged, but that the present gov-
ernment actively discourages it.
Born in Moinesht in 1912,
Rabbi Rosen is the scion of
distinguished Romanian
binic family. His father
e
late Rabbi Abraham
sen,
served as Rabbi in Fa shen
for more than 50 years,
d his
brother was Rabbi of usch-
witz prior to World W II.
Rabbi Rosen was educ ed in
Romania, and received th Doc-
for of Jurisprudence
- Te
from the University of Buc
rest in 1937. He attended the
Rabbinical Seminary in Vienna
until the Anschluss in 1938,
when he returned to his native
country where he was ordained
in 1940.
He was imprisoned briefly by
the Romanian government in
1940, and upon his release
served as a rabbi in Bucharest
In 1945, he was appointed sp
itual leader of the Great S a-
gogue in Bucharest, an m

his present position.
In addition to his d es as
Chief Rabbi, Dr. Rose serves
in the Romanian parlia nt, as
does the head of the R anion
Orthodox Church. Dr. osen
also edits a religious pe
