Silverstein Will Be Shaarey Zedek's Concert Soloist JOSEPH SILVERSTEIN the International Music Festival competition in Belgium, compet- ing against 36 other finalists from 18 countries. He served as concert master with the Denver and Houston orchestras prior to joining the Boston Symphony in 1955. Leonard E. Baron, chairman of the Shaarey Zedek centennial symphony concert committee, re- ports that a substantial portion of the tickets available have already been subscribed to, and urges those interested in attending this concert to secure their tick- ets at the Shaarey Zedek office, at the branch school office, 13735 W. Seven Mile, or at the Ford Auditorium box office. Tickets will be available at the office of Shaarey Zedek until Tuesday. Joseph Silverstein, native De- troiter, one of the country's leading violinists, who has just been named concertmaster of the Boston Symphony Orches- tra, will be the guest soloist at the Shaarey Zedek centen- nial concert, at Ford Audito- rium, at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 28. Featuring the Detroit Sym- phony Orchestra, with Valter Poole conducting, another solo- ist will be the distinguished pianist, Mischa Kottler. The program will include selections by Paul Ben-Haim, Ernest .Bloch, Leonard Bern- stein, Camille Saint-Saens and Felix Mendelssohn. • Detroit-born Silverstein, whose father was a violinist with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, re- ceived his training at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia where he studied with Efrem Zimbalist.
