• Catholic Church in Spain Acts , to Better Relations with Jews (Direct JTA Teletype Wire to The Jewish News) MADRID—For the first time in centuries, the C a t h o l i c Church in Spain is taking steps to improve relations between Catholics and Jews, it was re- vealed here Tuesday during an interview by a Jewish Tele- graphic Agency correspondent with Max Mazin, president of the Madrid Jewish Community. As result of disclosures • dur- ing-the Adolf Eichmann trial in Israel last year indicating that "many Nazis, pro-Nazis and former Nazis" had taken refuge in Spain, Mazin said he dis- cussed Catholic-Jewish relations here with Monsignor Lahi- guera, Deputy Bishop of Madrid. "The Monsignor," said Ma- zin, "showed interest in the problem and expressed his 1 Letter Box-, Rabbi Adler Defends 'Tenth Man' Artistry Editor, The Jewish News: There is a great deal of cur- rent discussion about Paddy Chayefsky's play "The Tenth Man." I do not intend to add fire to the discussion which appears to have generated already more heat than any other drama in recent years. I wish to do no more than to point up several criteria of judgment which have been invoked, which I believe to be entirely extraneous. The question is not what im- pact Jewish characters in a play will make on non-Jewish playgoers, but are the Jews who are portrayed authentic or not? Has the dramatist honestly de- picted an aspect of Jewish life, however unpleasant or unflat- tering it may be, or has he distorted or fabricated it? In a ward, the criterion of judgment is not, to use a popular phrase "whether it is good for Jews," but whether it is true or not. A play by a Jewish author - should not be, evaluated in terms of its contribution to good community relations. The artist is not a propagandist. We would stifle all hope for Jew- ish creativity in the arts if we were to make the artist the defender of the Jewish name or the fighter for Jewish rights. He must be permitted freely to deal with Jewish subjects and to speak the truth, however un- palatable, as he sees it. There is a time and an instrument for community relations and a time and a medium for art and the -two are not to be seen as iden- tical and- interchangeable. The discussion centering about "The Tenth Man" would be more val- uable and illuminating if the questions discussed were, "Is it true to life?" "Is it dramatical- ly effective?" "Does it reveal aristic integrity?" "Does it com- municate a significant insight?"
