The American Jewish Committee is now opening an office
in Israel with a view to presenting to the people of Israel its
interpretation of American Jewish life . . . It is also considering
the idea of opening an office in Rome, in view of the strong pro-
Jewish sentiments expressed by Pope John XXIII • on various
occasions . . . Catholic leaders in the United States are re-
peatedly stressing the fact that the pro-Jewish statements by
the Pope were not spontaneous gestures but represent his deep
personal attitude . . . They see in it a reminder that "a true
Christian cannot be an anti-Semite," and they do not hesitate
to say so in their official publications . .. America, one of the
leading Catholic weeklies in this country, in an editorial stressed
the Pope's statements as well as the fact that Dr. John Slawson,
executive vice-president of the American Jewish Committee,
participated in the recent meeting of the National Catholic
Conference for Inter-racial Justice . . . These and other similar
instances are interpreted by the Catholic organ-as "heralding a
springtime" in Jewish-Christian relations . . . There are, of
course, still conflicts of opinion between 'Christians and Jews in
this country which contribute to divisiveness . . . Jewish posi-
tions on matters such as Federal aid to education, church-state
separation and birth control are often sharply opposed to Catho-
lic positions, sometimes to Protestant, and at times to both .. .
Yet, during the past year, a number of problems long disturbing
to Christian-Jewish relations have been given a healthy public
airing . . . The willingness by some Catholic and Protestant
leaders to examine their religious textbooks with a ,view to elimi-
nate certain writings offensive to Jews is one case in point .. .
m other is the blunt sermon by the Dean of the Episcopal Cathe-
dral of St. Paul in Boston, the Very Reverend Charles H. Buck,
Jr., who told his congregation that "the basic document of anti-
Semitism in the Western world is the New Testament" and
urged the Church to do something about it.

A nationwide study of organized efforts of American ethnic
groups to preserve their non-English heritage is• now being spon-
sored by the United States Office of Education . .. The study
includes an evaluation of the Yiddish language press, its circula-
tion and circulation trends, as well as Yiddish language radio
programs and text books . . . The study will also collect data
on formal Jewish educational efforts at the elementary, sec-
ondary, higher and evening education levels, under secular or
ieligious auspices . . . It will seek to establish the number of
students in Yiddish and Hebrew schools, number of teachers,
schools, and hours of instruction, and average number of years
of attendance . . . It will survey the efforts by Jewish organiza-
tions to maintain and promote the Yiddish and Hebrew lan-
guages . . . This will include religious, fraternal, scholarly, lit-
erary, dramatic, choral, musical, artistic, recreational and other
organizations . . . The. study will seek information on the mem-
bership size of the ethnic organizations, frequency and nature
- of programs to preserve language mastery and interest, youth
divisions and their programs . . . Among other things, the survey
will strive to determine the opinions of Jewish group leaders
concerning the present and future of Yiddish and Hebrew lan-
guage potentials .. -. These leaders will be asked whether their
organizations are successfully maintaining mastery of Yiddish or
Hebrew and interest among adults and transmitting it to children
and young folks, and whether they are optimistic or pessimistic
about the retention of their language heritages in America .. .
The survey is being made because of the dearth of foreign lan-
guage proficiency in the American population and the need for
increased competence in this respect . .. Washington considers
it anomalous that a country that has been a haven for immi-
grants for many years should be faced by a scarcity of individuals
proficient in non-English languages.
