Dr. Hertz Brands Women's Branch of Orthodox
Jewish Congregations Sets Feb.
`Tenth Man' as
Caricature, Farce as Month for Kashruth Observance

Dr. Richard C. Hertz, Senior
Rabbi of Temple Beth El, de-
nounced the current play "The
Tenth Man" as a farce and a
caricature of Jews in his ser-
mon last Fr
day night.

February has been designated
Kashruth observance month by
the Women's Branch of the
Union of Orthodox Jewish Con-
gregations.
The Great Lakes Region of
the UDJC, which encompasses
Detroit and Windsor Synagogue
Sisterhoods, is launching a cam-
paign on many levels of activity
"to re-acquaint and re-orient Jew-
ish women and young people of
the central place of Kashrut ob-
servance among our people."
Under the chairmanship of
Mrs. Joshua Sperka, a number of
activities are announced.
Saturday, Feb. 10, has been
designated "Kashruth Observance
Sabbath" and all rabbis in De-
troit Synagogues will be asked to
dedicate their sermon to "the
basic position of kashruth in the
Jewish home."

A literary contest among all
pupils in religious and Hebrew
schools on the topic "Kashruth
—Its Practice and Observance"
is being launched by the UOJC
Women's Branch who will offer

entry blanks being available
through the school principal.
Thursday, Feb. 15, has been
designated "Kosher Food Day"
and an exhibit of kosher food
products will be held. Through
the co-operation of Norman Cott-
ler of the Dexter Davison Mar-
kets, exhibits, kits and samples
will be on display and will be
given away throughout the day
at the Cottler markets by teams
of women from the local Sister-
hoods. Local and national manu-;
facturers of kosher food products
are co-operating with the
"Kosher Campaign" in making
samples of their products avail-
able as gifts to customers on the
"Kosher Food Day Exhibit" on
Feb. 15.
"The continuing weakening of
kashruth observance among our
women, and the appaling ignor-
ance of the most elementary
knowledge or observance of kash-
ruth among our young people
forces us to attempt to re-awaken
and re-strengthen this basic prac-
tice of Jewish life which has
proved a foundation in Jewish
survival in the past, and will
continue to do so in the future,"
Mrs. Sperka states.
Serving with Mrs. Sperka in
the Kashruth campaign are Mes-
dames David J. Cohen and David
D o m b e y as co-chairmen. Mrs.
Oscar Banks is president of the

image of the American Jew,"
Dr. Hertz said.
"The play glorifies the mysti-
cal and upholds the supersti-
tious. It romanticizes medieval prizes for the best entry in the
fears and summons up hobgob- categories of poems, essays,
lins of ignorance. American short stories, or other literary
