JERUSALEM, (JTA) — T h e
remaining families of another
ancient Jewish • community,
that of Cochin in India, will
soon be brought to Israel, S. Z.
Shragai, head of the Jewish
Agency's immigration depart-
ment, told a meeting of Israeli
members of the Zionist Gen-
eral Council.
He said about 100 Cochin
Jews were left of the nearly
3,000 Jews Who lived in Cochin
before 1948. More than 2,000
now live in Israel. There are
varying opinions about the
origin of the Cochin Jewish
community, including the the-
ory that the Cochin Jews came

(maabarot) would not be set
up under any circumstances.
At a meeting of the Jewish
Agency executive earlier in the
week, Zisling reported_ that
some 55 per cent of the new-
comers during 1961 were in the
14 to 30 year age bracket and
some 20 per cent were over 55.
These age data represent a sub-
stantial improvement in terms
of labor potential as compared
with immigration in recent
years, he explained.
Moshe Sharett, chairman of
the Jewish Agency Agency ex-
cutive, told the session tfiat
the basis of available infor-
m tion, immigration was likely
to e on the increase for a long

Israel to Get Gavel Used
at UN Partition Session
RIO DE JANEIRO, (JTA —
The gavel used in the historic
United Nations General Assem-
bly session Nov. 29, 1947, which
adopted the Palestine Partition
resolution, Will be presented to
Israeli President Izhak Ben-Zvi
by Mrs. Osvaldo Aranha, widow
of Brazil's late UN delegate who
presided at that session. Mrs.
Aranha is planning to visit Is-
rael to present the gavel per-
sonally to President Ben-Zvi.
