Konrad Bercovici, journalist
and author noted for his. writings
on the life of gypsies, died Dec.
27 in his New York home. He
was 80.
Bercovici, who was born in
Romania, but _forced to flee to
France when the anti-Jewish po-
groms broke out in his native
country, was himself part gypsy.
But he once wrote, "There is not
a gypsy in the world who cannot
tell you who I am. I am a gypsy
by choice and not by blood, by
temperament and not,race."
He spent much of his youth
with the gypsies and in 1928
wrote "Story of the Gypsies," a
basic study often used in re-
search on the subject.
A man of many careers, the
stories he wrote -seldom sur-
passed the adventures in his own
life. He helped to paint the
Eiffel Tower, sold clocks as a
traveling vendor, worked in a
furniture factory and shoveled
snow from city streets.
After he came to New York
in 1904, he worked in a sweat-
shop making artificial flowers
and read Butler's "The Way of
All Flesh" while at a job play-
ing piano at a nichelodean.
In 1917, Bercovici joined the
staff of the New York World and
then went to work for the New
York Evening Post three years
later. He covered assignments all
over the world. He later wrote
for a number of magazines and
wrote several scripts for movies,
besides his short stories and
novels. Bercovici for many years
was a member of the famou
Algonquin Round Table, a gather
ing of the noted literary per
sonalities of the time.
