Goodman, is concerned with human beings and their en- vironment. His essays are about sex. and politics, science and religion, technology and paint- ting. often tyrannical; neverthe- less their urban Jewish mem- bers, rather well educated on the average, have inevitably run into fundamental conflict. Their atmosphere has there- fore been sometimes unhappy but never deadening; and they have produced basic so- cial inventions and new char- acter-types."
