The peoples of Latin America have rejected attempts by
neo-Nazis to stir up anti-Semitism, according to Latin American
Jewish leaders visiting New York for consultations with the
World Jewish Congress. Shown above are (left to right) Rabbi
F. Winter, of Montevideo, president of the WJC committee in
Uruguay; Dr. Nahum Goldmann, WJC president, and Dr. Moises

executive, at a meeting in New York.

Mayer's Novel, 'Web of Hate,' Warns
Against Re-Emerging Nazi Dangers

Dr. Frederick Mayer, professor
of humanities at Redlands Uni-
versity, author of 15 books,
sounds a warning against the
possible resurgence of Nazism in
Germany, in his novel, "Web of
Hate," published by Whittier.
Books (263 Chapel St., New
Haven, Contl:).
His story about a Nai r told in
the first person, expresses the
reactions of a German whose
father was a Nazi, who had him-
self joined the Hitler Youth and
gloried in the Nazi ideas, but
who abandoned his Nazi thinking,
yet whose' son, like him in his
youth, joined a military youth
group, proving that the cycle re-
peats itself and that the young
Germans think militaristically.
Prof. Mayer therefore has ap
pended to' his novel "A Factual
Epilogue—A Letter to the Read-
er," in which he warns:

Nazism and became martyrs.
"Web of Hate" begins by stat-
ing: "A swastika was painted on
the city hall in Hanau. . .. It was
painted by my father . . ." To-
wards the end of the book, after
he had given permission to his
son Wolfgang to join a youth mili-
tary group, the story relates:
"Last night a swastika was painted
on the city hall. . . . They sus-
pected a student at the local
Gymnasium. Could Wolfgang be
involved? No, that was impossi-
ble. He was my son. ... Wolfgang
might be a nationalist, but cer-
tainly not a Nazi." But from this
point on Karl Holzhauser talks to
himself, thus:

"Officially, there are almost
no Nazis today, but beneath the
surface remains a jungle.
Young people still talk ab
expansion. Many st*

his methods. Many forme
cers look upon the w with

whether Germany has learned a
lesson," that while Germany's
"political and economic recovery
has been almost a miracle," he
states that "prosperity is a facade
which_ should not deceive us." He
admonishes his reader against the
"genteel" followers of Hitler who
made it possible for him to rise
to power.
Analyzing Hitler's skillful
study of mass psychology,, he
points to "the dense fog" that as
created by the propaganda of
Goebbels and he calls it as de-
vastating, as Hitler's legacy. He
reminds us that the Hitler pro-
gram was carried out by one of
the world's most civilized na-
tions and he declares that "with-
out a sense of conscience, modern
man may not survive. He urges:

"Let places like Auschwitz
become permanent shrines to
which children and adults will
come from all over the world
to realize what the fruits of
prejudice are and what intoler-
ance can do to human beings."

would not adhere completely to
the Nazi methods committed sui-
cide, • Karl tried to condone it,
and another anti-Nazi chided him:
"You have become like a ma-
chine, a machine without any feel-
ings." Karl insisted the way he
was pursuing was the way to sur-
vive, and the anti-Nazi warns
that the war kills a lot of things
inside people, that "a man can be
alive and still be dead."
It is the crime of N2' ism that is
exposed in this novel. The refer-
ences to Jews are only incidental.
Only one of the characters — a
girl Karl wants to seduce — is
Jewish. She stops his advances
when she reveals to him: "I'm
Jewish."
The story is strong enough
nevertheless to serve as a warn-
ing to peoples of all faiths about
the dangers of a re-emerging
Nazism.

Yeshiva is off to a falter-

the lads will do better in fenc-

Judge Emil Fuchs, one of the
Jewish baseball owners in the
major leagues, died recently in
Boston at the age of 85. He
owned the Boston Braves from
1923 to 1935—when the Braves
weren't much good — and was
deeply involved with Casey
Stengel, who has gone on to re-
markable fame.
In 1935, the Braves were sag-
