THE LATE JACOB ELLIMAN

A prominent Detroiter;• Louis
NI. Elliman, this week pointed
with pride to the fact that his
father, the late Jacob Morris Elli-
man, represented the Dublin,
Ireland, Jewish community at the
Fifth World Zionist Congress in
Basle, Switzerland, in 1901, and
was an associate and friend of
Dr. Theodor Herzl, the founder
of the modern political Zionist
movement and of the World
Zionist Congresses.
Louis Elliman, a native of
Dublin, recalled his father's his-
toric role on the occasion of the
celebration of the 60th anniver-
sary of the Jewish National Fund
of Ireland of which his father
was one of the first president&
An historian of the Dublin
Jewish community, writing in the
Nachlat Dublin Magazine, the of-
ficial organ of the Dublin JNF
Commission, in last month's is-
sue, stated:
"Jacob Elliman was a staunch
adherent to the traditional pat-
tern of Judaism and also a
staunch adherent to the national
aspect of Judaism and a lover of
Zion. And when Jacob came back
from that Fifth Zionist Congress
he brought back with him a blue-
and-white- banner which he imme-
diately hoisted in Ireland, the
first Jew in this country to do so.
This he maintained aloft until his
death in Dublin on Jan. 27, 1942.
Jacob Elliman founded the Dub--
lin Commission of the JNF. He,
served as one of its early chair-
men."
Louis Elliman "came to the
United States in 1912, after his
Bar Mitzvah. His seven • sisters
and brothers, all of whom re-
mained- in Ireland, are all grand-
parents. His mother will be 95
on her next birthday. All the Elli-
mans continue the deep interest
in Zionism and in the Jewish Na-
tional Fund instilled in them by
