West Berlin Senator of the Interior Joachim Lipschitz died Dec. 11 at 43, becoming the third high city official to die of a heart attack in recent months. On Sept. 17, Willy Henneberg, Speaker of the City Parliament, died during a speech to the House. Senator Paul Hertz, head of West Berlin's Economic De- partment, died on Oct. 23. In his capacity as head of the city's internal department, Lip- schitz was in charge of West Berlin's police force. The son of a Jewish physician and a member of the Social Democratic youth organization, Lipschitz was arrested by the Nazis at the age of 18. He was later released and drafted into the German army. He lost • his right arm in combat. Surviving Lipschitz is his widow. Their four-year-old son, an only child, died last spring. Lipschitz was stricken Monday at a special session of the city government called to prepare for the Paris foreign ministers con- ference on Berlin. Jacob Shevitz Dies: Lived Here 56 Years Jacob Shevitz, a resident of Detroit for 56 years, who was active in the building and real estate business and was among the pioneers who developed the Dexter area, died Sunday night at the age of 75. JACOB SHEVITZ and Mrs. Freida Ilan of Israel; 16- grandchildren and four brothers, Meyer, Abram, Mitch- ell and Samuel. Mr. Shevitz came to Detroit in 1892, two years after his parents arrived in the U. S. from Poland. His late wife, the former Anna Levin, who, like her husband, came from Grod- no, arrived in Detroit in 1902. They were married in 1905 and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in December 1955 —three years before Mrs. She- vitz's death. Mr. Shevitz served as presi- dent of Congregation Emanuel and was active in its merger with Beth Tefilo, being re- named Beth Tefilo Emanuel synagogue. He also was presi- dent of Congregation Mogen Abraham. He was active in the United Hebrew Schools when the local educational system was housed on Kirby and An- toine. He also was active in Yeshivath Beth Yehudah, serv- ing on its board, and was a leader in the Vaad Hayeshivoth. Author, Noted Zionist Leader, Dr. Joseph Tenenbaum Dies at 74 NEW YORK, (JTA) — Dr. Joseph L. Tenenbaum, surgeon, author, and one of the foremost leaders in Zionism and general defense of Jewish rights, died here Sunday. He was' 74. Born in Galicia, and educated there, he came to the United States in 1920. In 1919, he was a member of the Jewish delegation to the Paris Peace Confer- ence that fol- lowed • World War I. He was a founder and past president *ow of the World and American Federations off Polish Jews; former chair- Dr. Tenenbaum man of the executive com- mittee and vice-president of the American Jewish Congress; na- tional chairman of the Joint Boycott Council from 1933 to 1941; very active in the leader- ship of. the Zionist movement; and a prominent Hebraist. He was a member of the American Medical Association, a prominent urologist, and a mem- ber of the Jewish Academy of Arts and Sciences. His many works included books on econo- mics, international affairs, and against Hitlerism.
