22 THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS — Friday, December 15, 1961 — Archeologist Warns Against Using Bible for Historical. Purpose ANN ARBOR — A prominent Biblical archeologist has warned against confusing history in the Bible and the Bible as history. This was the theme of a lec- ture by Dr. Nelson Glueck, presi- dent of Hebrew Union College- Jewish Institute of Religion, at the University of Michigan Zwer- dling lectures sponsored by the department of Near Eastern studies. It must be constantly remem- bered that the Bible was not compiled for a strictly historical purpose, he said. Much in the Bible can archeologically be con- firmed, he added, but there is much more in it which "cannot, and need not, and never will be historically substantiated." He said the Bible is first and foremost a theological document, dealing with the "power and purposes and imperatives of the God of the universe and of Israel and of all mankind." He also said that various kinds of source materials, including important but by no means suf- ficient historical ones, are em- ployed in the Scriptures for illus- trative purposes, and that Bibli- cal archeology is not to engage in the attempt to "prove" the Bible as history, but rather to add to the understanding of his- tory in the Bible. The Jewish Legion, the first Jewish fighting force since the days Of Bar Kochba, was con- ceived by Vladimir Jabotinsky and Josef Trumpeldor, and was organized by the Jewish War Office during the early days of the First World War. The first units known as the "Zion Mule Corps" achieved fame during the Gallipoli Campaign in 1915, under the command of Captain Josef Trumpeldor and Colonel John Henry Patterson. In 1917, thousands of Jewish volunteers in the United States, with the consent of the U.S. government, enlisted in the Jewish Legion to fight on the Palestine front under the flag of our ally Great Britain. Itzhak Ben-Zvi and David Ben- Gurion, who were then resi- dents of the United States, led in the recruiting of vohinteers and went overseas with the fighting units. The Jewish bat- talions were trained and equipped as members of the renowned Royal • Fusiliers Re- giment, and saw active service in the Palestine and Trans- Jordanian campaigns under General Edmund Allenby.
