Mayo Clinic, Red Cross
Save Israeli Girl

Aanat Yaalon, 12, was back
at her home in Ein Hamifratz
Settlement, Israel, last week to
celebrate the first really joyous
Hanukah of her short life.
Although now she has the
promise of a long and healthy
life, until two months ago there
was no certainty that she would
live to see the night of Dec. 3.
All the way from her Israeli
home, she journeyed with her
mother to Rochester, Minn.,
where, shortly before her 12th
birthday, Oct. 20, she underwent
surgery at the Mayo Clinic to
correct a serious defect in her
heart.
The American Red Cross at
national headquarters in Wash-
ington had readily acceded to
the request months before by

the Magen David Adom of Is-
rael to see that sufficient blood
for the operation would be
available; and the replacement
was in accordance with a long-
standing arrangement between
its St. Paul blood center and
the Mayo Clinic.

ALGIERS, (JTA)--Caught in
a growing crossfire of demands
for support from both under-
ground movements of the OAS'
opposing Algerian independence
and the FLN, the Algerian in-
dependence movement, the situa-
tion of the Jews in Constantine
was reported to be worsening and
Jews living in a constant state
of insecurity.
Jewish organizations in Algeria
held a meeting at which they
decided to ask the Joint Distribu-
tion Committee to send a director
to Algiers. There has been no
JDC director in Algiers for the
past three years.
Algerian Jews consider the

presence of a JDC director essen-
tial to help Jews in some towns
and quarters where their security
position is bad to the point

where - their lives are in danger.

Argentine Philosopher
Repudiates Bigotry

BUENOS AIRES, (JTA)-
The noted philosopher Dr.
Lanza del Vasto, who is now
in Buenos Aires, walked the
entire length of State of Is-
rael Street here and cleaned
off street signs which had
been defaced by vandals.
Walking through the street
with a ladder and cleaning
brush, Dr. del Vasto told
reporters: "To be against
violence does not mean that
one must be passive. One must
begin practicing this prin-
ciple in small measure."

Education Association
Challenged to Oppose
Arab States Bias

The National Education Asso-
ciation was challenged by the
Jewish Labor Committee to de-
clare itself in opposition to pres-
sures from certain Arab states
which refuse to permit American
tourists of the Jewish faith to
enter those countries.
The demand came from Jacob
Pat, executive secretary of the
Jewish Labor Committee, in a
communication to Dr. William G.
Carr, executive secretary of the
NEA in Washington, D.C.
