Anniversary Celebration Marked by
Impressive Congregational Dinner

National, local and state lead-
ers took note of the 100th an-
niversary of Congregation Shaa-
rey Zedek and sent messages
of greetings to the centennial
dinner held last Sunday evening
at Cobo Hall.
Heading the list of notables
who greeted the congregation
was President John F. Kennedy,
whose warm message of con-
gratulations was given pro-
longed a p p l a u s e. Governor
SwainSon, heads of national
movements in Conservative Ju-
daism, local rabbis and or-
ganizations were among those
greeting the synagogue on its
commencement of its second
century of existence.
The toastmastership of
Judge CharlesRubiner marked
the continuation of a preced-
ent dating back 25 years;
when Judge Rubiner, a former
Shaarey Zedek president, • pre
sided at the 75th -annivetsara,
celebration of the synagogue.
It was an occasion for remini-
scences which took the gath-
ering back a quarter of a cen-
tury to a similar re-dedication
to spiritual service to Jewry
by. the congregants.
The event served to spark re-
newed interest in the current

drive for the building of Shaa-
rey Zedek's new sanctuary on
Northwestern Hwy. and 11 Mile
Road. Louis • Berry reported on
the progress made in the con-
struction of the synagogue. He
said that the $4,000,000 project
undertaken by the congregation
already has brought $2,400,000
in pledges, $1,100,000 having
been received in cash towards
that sum, and he appealed for
fulfillment of the pledges im-
mediately- to make the task of
synagogue building easier.
"The faith inherent in Shaa-
rey Zedek is back of the
pledges," Berry said. While he
foresaw "along, hard•road," he
expressed' confidence that the
goal of synagogue-building will
be attained and the further
service of Shaarey Zedek will
go on without interruption.
Dr. Louis Finkelstein, Chan-
cellor of the Jewish Theo-
logical Seminary of America,
who was to be the principal
speaker, was unable to de-
plane here due to the fog and
was grounded in Chicago, but
he did arrive here Monday
morning to address the din-
ner at the Standard Club in
behalf of the Seminary.

cipal speaker of the evening,
spoke of the congregation's
enormous responsibility. "We
have inherited the past that be-
long to Shaarey Zedek," he said.
"I think of history in terms of
people—in terms of the 17 men
who met a hundred years ago to
establish this congregation. It
was a time of crisis for America,
when brother was 'arrayed in
arms against brother in a civil
war. But the men who met to
found this congregation showed
their profound faith in act more
than words—a faith in Judaism
and in America."
Emphasizing the importance
of the building program for the
new synagogue, Rabbi Adler as-
serted that "we dare to build
and we shall build, for our-
selves and the generation to
come that will adhere to the
same faith that uplifts us. We
are building not for us alone
but for our faith and for the
principles of freedom in our
country. We are indebted to our
ancestors and we shall place in
debt to us, by our task of build-
ing a new sanctuary, those who
follow us."
Judge Rubiner opened the
program with a "shehecheyanu"
and in recalling the attainments
of the past emphasized that the
