The National Council of Jew- ish Women was honored by the Jewish Vocational Service at a meeting in Temple Israel, Dec. 4, for outstanding assistance to persons in the Jewish com- munity requiring scholarship funds for college and profes- sional education. The Council was commended for its leadership in the Com- mittee on Jewish Scholarship Service consisting of 22 organ- izations having scholarship funds. The present president of the Committee is Samuel S. Greenberg. The Jewish Voca- tional Service is the profession- al agency which serves this committee. The committee was organized in 1948 under the 'auspices of the Jewish Welfare Federation of Detroit. The National Coun- cil of Jewish Women was among the founding organiza- tions and has participated ac- tively in the committee's work from its inception. The Committee on Jewish Scholarship Service distributes approximately $12,000 annu- ally in scholarship loans and grants. The scholarship loans are _repayable without interest after the student has entered his chosen occupation. Scholar- ship assistance has been given for a wide range of professions including architecture, dentis- try, engineering, • medicine, os- teopathy, social work, and teaching. Many former scholar- ship recipients are now leaders in the Detroit community and are established in a wide range - Post Office Issues Annual Plea for Early Holiday Mailing United States Post Office offi- cials have issued their annual plea for early mailing during the holiday season. A few points of advice on holiday mailing are as follows: 1. Letters and cards should be faced one way, tied in bundles and segregated as to "local" and "out-of-town." Labels may be ob-, tabled from any post office. 2. Parcel post should be pack- \ ed carefully and securely in strong and durable containers,, and must bear the complete - re- turn address of the sender. 3. Parcels containing perish- able matter must be endorsed "perishable" directly above the name of the addressee, and should be sent "special delivery." The appointment of Dr. Piero P. Foa as director of research at Sinai Hospital of Detroit has been announced by Abra- ham Srere, president of the board of trustees. Dr. Foa, who will report to the hospital immediately after the first of the year, is cur- rently professor of physiology and pharmacology at the Chi- cago Medical School. He is a cum laude graduate of the Uni- versity of Milano Medical School, where he was a of the fac- ulty until 1938. After serving a fel- lowship at Yale Univer- sity and at the University of Michigan, he .:" joined the Dr.. Foa staff of the Chicago Medical School in 1943. "Dr. Foa's general research interest in the field of Endoc- rinology and Metabolism, with special emphasis on Diabetes," Srere said, in • announcing the appointment.
