Heads of Temple Israel Affiliates
on Program at Sunday's Event

Arrangements have been com-
pleted for the program at
Temple Israel's Bar Mitzvah
Year "Salute to Israel" Hanu-
kah dinner at 7 p.m., Sunday,
in the Leon Fram Hall, it was
announced by Leslie R. Schmier,
president. Julian S. Tobias is
dinner chairman. Co-chairmen
are Nathaniel H. Goldstick and
Max Osnos.
Rabbi Leon Fram will open
the program with the invocation
and Rabbi M.
Robert Syme
will pronounce
the benedic-
tion. 0 n e of
highlights will
be a congrega-
tional Hanu-
kah candle
lighting cere-
mony, accord-
ing to Tobias.
. Schmier Greetings will
be extended. by Schmier as
president of the Temple.
George Jessel, "Toastmaster
General of the USA," will be
entertainer and Avis Shulman,
national chairman, Israel Bond
Speakers Bureau, the guest
speaker.. The dinner is on be-
half of Israel Bonds.
The blessings for the lighting
of the Hanukah candles will be
recited by Reuben Levine and
Sol I. Stein. The candles will
be lighted by Mrs. David B.
Keywell, president of the af-
filiates council; Mrs. George
Victor, president of the Temple
Israel Sisterhood; Sam Maze,

president of the Men's Club and
Abel Selburn, president of the
Couples Club.
Jessel, born on New York's
Lower East Side, went to work
at the age of 10, when his father
died, to help earn a living for
his family. He got a job singing
with a trio, and when he was
11 he joined a vaudevile act,
"School Boys and Girls". From
there he went into the "Gus
Edwards' Song Revue" and then
teamed with Eddie Cantor in
an act called "Kid Kabaret",
which toured from coast to
coast.
In 1918, Jessel developed his
famous "telephone conversation
with Mama" routine. He starred
in night clubs and in a number
of motion pictures.
Since the birth of the State
of Israel, Jessel has devoted
himself to its cause and espe-
cially to the sale of Israel
Bonds. He has .been honored
by the Israel government and
he practically comm utes be-
tween Israel and the U.S.

Tuesday, at the Labor Zionist Institute. Jan Bart will head
the program of entertainment. Admission is free and refresh-
ments and a social hour will follow the program. Besides
Marshall Lodge, those sponsoring the Dec. 12th affair on behalf
of Israel Bonds are: Bloch, Tikvah, Fox, Detroit, Livonia,
Handler-East Side and Yuster-Rosenberg Lodges and their
respective chapters and B. & P. Chapters.

The Italy-Israel fashion- festi-
val and New Year's Eve . dance
will be a sparkling climax to
the 1961 Detroit Israel Bond
campaign, ' according to Mes-
dames Joseph Katchke and Max
Stollman, co-chairmen of the De-
troit Israel Bond Women's Divi-
sion, which is sponsoring the
affair.
A total of 41 original crea-
tions by the leading fashion
designers of Italy and Israel
will be shown here. The event
will be held at the Sheraton-
Cadillac Hotel and will include
a champagne hour from 9 n.m.,
a midnight supper with Kosher
cuisine and dancing until 4 a.m.
to the music of Panchito and
his orchestra. There will be no
solicitationS -or speeches.
There will be other features
on the program and a noted
commentator will describe the
fashions.
