Guest Editorial Bar-Iian's Great Role By PH I LLI P STOLLMAN Chairman, American Committee for Bar-Ban University at Ramat Gan, Israel I have been privileged with the responsibility of heading one of the most important educational move- ments in world Jewry—that of the Bar-Ilan University in Israel. Blessed with economic advances made in recent years, challenged by the great flow of immigrants into the country, the little Jewish State has had the vision to develop culturally as well as industrially. Immigrants arriving from more than 70 lands throughout the world are being provided with educational opportunities. Their children are getting a schooling comparable to the finest in the world. Bar-Ilan University steps in to fill a gap—by linking science with• tradition, by offering courses in ancient Jewish lore as well as in the most technical academic subjects. Bar-Ilan has grown from a mere infant only six years ago to a real cultural giant. The university has emerged as one of the very great institutions of learning in the Middle East. At our annual dinner on Wednesday, deserved honors will be accorded to Brig. Gen. S. L. A. Marshall, distinguished military analyst and defender of Israel's just rights. I am happy to express my appreciation for his activities in defense of an embattled and unjustry maligned people. We also will have the privilege of welcoming the university's president, Rabbi Joseph Lookstein. It is a source of great pride to us to know that the Jewish community of Detroit has played One of the major roles in providing assistance to this university. Our people in our wonderful community have provided funds and leadership in Bar-Ilan's behalf. I wish to commend my associates here on their interest in Bar-Ilan, and to invite their continued co- operation. It is a personal joy and source of pride for me to be a part of this great movement. Israel's Knesset Won't Debate Halt of Weapons Sale to West Germany JERUSALEM — (JTA) — Is- rael's parliament defeated three motions to discuss an immedi- ate halt of Israeli arms' sales to West Germany. Deputies of the Communist Party, Herut and Mapam refer- red to the West German bid for nuclear weapons and con- tended that the continued de- liveries of Israeli submachine guns to "pave the way" for that country to obtain an atom- ic arsenal as well. Yaacov Landau of Herut said that the Israeli weapons sales were a "certificate of moral re- habilitation" to West Germany. Mapam's Israel Barzilai argued that the political significance of the arms sales were detriment- al to Israel's interests. Commu- nist Shmuel Mikunis asserted that the arms sale policy "fur- ther isolated" Israel from the neutral states. Replying briefly on behalf of the government, Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion recalled a previous Knesset discussion on the subject in which the oppo- sition failed to prevail. His re- quest that the motions be re- jected as "insincere and unre- alistic" was sustained only by a narrow majority because one coalition partner, Achdut Avo- (la, which fought the arms sale in the earlier debate to which the Prime Minister referred, today. abstained fr. rejected a order Israel from P tugal for its fa ous achine guns and so Uzzi s 1- permission to its refus air to gian, P the weapon sup er eputy Defe Shi, n Peres ace defen lap- tement the ands d Commu am eports for a ull deba 702 Gt4666 that the Israeli-made weapons were being used by Portuguese forces to fight the rebellion in its Angola colony. He added that relations with the Belgian firm, FN, had been "satisfactory and correct" since the relationship was established and that he therefore had full faith in the firm's statement that it had not and would not supply the guns to Portugal. A large percentage of Israel's light arms come from the Bel- gian firm with which Israel has an agreement for exchange of know-how and the manufacture of components and spare parts for the submachine guns. Mordecai Bentov of Mapam suggested that it would be best not to sell arms to anybody be- cause such sales were "fraught with danger." The defense offi- cial replied that it would be "senseless" for Israel to im- pose such a self-embargo be- cause the outcome of wars was not determined by submachine guns, however efficient the Uzzi might be. City of Hope Doctors Develop Test for Drug Sensitivity' LOS ANGELES — A simple, rapid test to screen persons for a potentially dangerous drug sensitivity has been developed by two City of Hope physicians. The new test will be made available by the city of Hope without charge to doctors everywhere. Dr. Virgil F. Fairbanks and Dr. Ernest Beutler described the new test in a report to the annual American Society of Hematologists meeting here. Sensitivities to certain drugs are known to be caused by an inherited abnormality in cellu- lar chemistry. The test reported provides a simple way to iden- tify and protect people against a specific sensitivity of this type. Previously available tests are relatively complex and difficult to perform. The test developed at the City of Hope can be done in any physician's office. MRS.
