Why is it that a quorum of
adult males (a Minyan of 19)
is required for the recital of
certain prayers?
The requirement is quite an
old one. It is found in the Mish-
nah (Megillah 4:3) where it is the
prescribed minimum attendance
for such functions as the recital
of 'the Kaddish, the public read-
ing of the Holy Scroll, the recita-
tion of "Barchu" with its public
response, Kedushah, and other
items which generally entail the
public sanctification of the name
of the Almighty. The Talmud
bases this re upon the
Biblical

Almig
han the prayer of a
sing ndividual. Psychologically,
quite evident that a greater
spirit is generally felt in the pres-
ence of a congregation praying
together in unison than about one
man 'praying alone. The number
10 being the first unit of count-
ing thus involves the first com-
bination of individuals on a high-
enplane. While there certainly is
room for individual prayer in
Jewish tradition, nevertheless,
when the prayer calls for the
sanctification of the name of the
Almighty, or when a ceremony
calls for public acclamation, the
quorum of 10 is a basic require-
ment.
* * *
What is the derivation of the
expression "Minyan?"
The term comes from a He-
breW root meaning "to count."
It thus means "a count," which
could- technically be any count.
Since the required "count" of the
men present at certain prayers
is 10, the proper quorum . (count)
must have been referred to as a
"count of 10" (Minyan Asarah)
and probably was later abbrevi-
ated to the form of "Minyan,"
since it was known that this count
must have been 10.
