from the 19th century,
ough the thing it denotes is
ancient"—and in his "glance
at the history of Israel" refers
to rabbinic and other sources,
discusses Hasidism, evaluates
"Judaism Today" in its numer-
ous aspects.
There is an unbiased ap-
proach to Israel and Zionism,
and although written from the
viewpoint of a Christian there
is a commendable objectivity
about Jewish traditions. Jew-
ish, traditions. Jewish readers
will, however, scrutinize care-
fully statements such as: "Some
isolated thinkers and writers of
the Liberal movement would
nowadays tend to allow Chris-
tianity to have a genuine mis-
Sion of salvation," He • speaks
here of the abandonment by
Judaism to Christianity and Is-
lam the tasks of proselytism
and he speaks of the "difficulty
which Jewish thought is already
experiencing to its cost, that
of reconciling the universalist
and particularist aspects." Re-
form Jews certainly will deny
that Liberal thought concedes
to Christianity a "mission of
salvation." -
Assuming in his conclusion
that some readers "may feel
that the picture of Judaism we
have so rapidly sketched'is too
beautiful; too idealized, too lit-
tle in accordance with their ac-
cepted ideas or personal expe-
rience," Fr. Demann asserts:
"We must always be conscious
that we all belong to the same
family, the family of the peop;le
of God, and be certain that in
God's designs that family is es-
sentially one The Christian
cannot be really objective in
his study of the face of his
Jewish brother if he does not
set himself to look first for the
family features, for the marks
of our common roots, our corn-
man heritage and our common
hope."
